    The consensus is NOT that the Smith fight was a dive. That's one of those lazy myths that get perpetuated after they're created and spun by people with agendas. Look back at the magazines at the time of the knockout. There wasn't a hint of a wiff of suspicion that Witherspoon threw the fight. It was a case of a chronic underachieving lardass getting splattered across the canvas by a guy who punched like a nuclear missle cilo.

    The buzz created by the finish contributed to massive hype over a Tyson-Smith fight, which became extremely attractive overnight.

    Too many people **** on the hall. I think it is a measure of greatness and the question shouldn't be if he's better than people in there, the question should be whether he's a great.

    For me, no.

    Tim Witherspoon is in the hall of fame. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2008.

    Witherspoon addressed it plenty I reckon. He was not ready to fight, but Don King would not hear that, and outright threatened him out of the hotel room the day of the fight. Tim got caught fair and square, and used the first opportunity not to get up.

    In my opinion winning the World Heavyweight title would be to me the pinnacle, as Marciano said:
    "What could be better than walking down any street in any city and knowing you're the heavyweight champion of the world?"

    Any accolade after that in the boxing world pales into significance, especially when it solely on basis of others opinions

    Having said that i was a youth when being the Champ meant you were the Man, everyone knew you, or of you, ......Dam i'm getting old.

    @KernowWarrior

    In 80s though Larry Holmes/Mike Tyson were the only ones considered "True Heavyweight champions" the others were considered "belt holders" pretenders to the throne if you will who kept winning and losing the belt after 1 or 2 fights.

    As much I like Witherspoon I don't think he has the resume to be in Hall Of Fame.

    Yes, this was well documented at the time. When Tubbs dropped out after dropping a massive bowl of Peanut Butter Crunch ice-cream on his foot, Tim wanted the fight cancelled and to go straight into a unification with Tyson that March (having already beaten Smith, who was a late replacement). But of course Don- and Carl King- wanted 90% of his purse so the fight went ahead. Tim looked forlorn from the off.

    No. He could fight if he wanted to and if he put the effort in, but not a hall-of-famer.
