if a pacquiao fight didnt arise i'd see cotto mayweather 2. in a perfect world though, we'd see mayweather-pacquiao, mayweather would vacate, and cotto would take on alvarez for the vacant title.
It's a sorry state indeed. If there were better match-ups available at the weight range I'd be far less interested in Cotto II. As I edited into my last post before your quote,
I mean, I disagree. he's definitely relevant, especially if he puts on a spectacular performance against timothy bradley.
:conf I just think if Mayweather vs. Pacquiao ever does get made, people are going to be really disappointed in how it plays out. Even if Mayweather fights more like he's been doing lately, it just doesn't strike me as having the stylistic makings of anything too competitive or thrilling. And Pac by himself doesn't automatically make a fight exciting just by virtue of showing up. (see: Clottey and Mosley, and to an extent certain stretches of the 2nd Marquez rematch) He's "relevant" in the sense that he's a big name, the biggest in the sport opposite Mayweather and more popular - but to me it's just never been an appealing match-up in terms of how competitive it would actually turn out being. I honestly do give Cotto a better chance in a rematch than I give Pac against Floyd. That said, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable at all picking Cotto in a rematch with Pac himself, even at a nice comfortable full 154. SMF.
I think May-Money is a must just for boxing's relevance. If the #1 and #2 in the world are in the same weight range and don't meet, you have to bow to those who say boxing has lost it's relevance. I can't think of a sport where the two proven best in a generation won't meet outside of combat sports. It's the fight boxing needs. I'd want to see it even if I felt the same way about the fight as you do, IB.
I think it's pretty counterintuitive to believe that an aggressive, more stationary floyd mayweather, against manny pacquiao, somehow doesn't make for a thrilling matchup. that being said, i'm willing to agree with you if he bombs against timothy bradley.
That's fine and I see where you're coming from with that, but I'm still walking the low road and stumping for the better in-ring match-up (but worse for the sport) that Mayweather vs. Martinez would be. :yep I'm far more about what happens between the ropes than the significance of "Events", probably to the point where I'm a little willfully blind to the greater good of the sweet science.
...I've favoured Mayweather pretty heavily forever. However, this weekend is the final confirmation that Floyd does have 12 bike rounds in his legs any more and knows it. That makes things a little more interesting as far as I am concerned. I think Martinez-Mayweather would involve a huge amount of waiting. Dozens of commentators talking about "chess matches" in dozens of different languages. I'd take the Pac fight right now.
Exactly. If Mayweather and Pac dont fight, than Martinez, if not than Cotto rematch will do. The fight was competitive and entertaining. The styles matched up well.
It was a very clear win in which Cotto gave no reason to believe that he would fare better in a rematch. Both guys should move on.
I'd watch it but there's bigger fish to fry....Manny and Sergio are all I care to see....maybe Canelo or Khan in a couple years if they look great in their next couple fights and they beat elite opponenents.
Pacquiao then the Martinez Chavez winner....If Khan ever gets back on his feet he can fight Khan in England....I expect Khan to get beat up by Lamont though. Clottey in Africa in front of Mandela-something Floyd said he always wanted to do.
