Like Victor said above, boxing is a sport and not a fight to the death. I have no interest in seeing someone get seriously injured in the ring. The stoppage may have been premature but at least Quillin has the opportunity to fight again.

No standing 8. Although NY is one of the few places that still uses it, it isn't allowed for wba title fights.

No it wasn't a perfect stoppage, but under the circumstances, and following thr mantra of "better a punch too soon", it was acceptable IMO.

Quinllan got paid good money last nite. He should have been given a chance to earn his money. If he gets starched, thats part of the business. This is not amateur boxing.

After bypassing the ref with that impressive chicken dance he did appear to a have the Eyes Wide Shut expression.

Quillin took like 20 unanswered punches. He didn't want any more.

It doesn't matter if a fighter can take one or two more punches before dropping- if you can't defend yourself anymore, the fight's over. Quillin couldn't defend himself anymore. That means that even if you don't think it was a perfect stoppage, it wasn't a bad one.

OK, I watched the Quillin/Jacobs fight to see what the fuss is about with the stoppage.

I don't see why it's controversial. Quillin took 20 unanswered punches, and was completely out of it. He could have taken permanent damage if the fight had been allowed to continue.

What confused everything is the ref. Why did Dock even jump in, in the first place? He took his eyes off of Quillin, then looks back at him when he should've let them continue and stayed close. Did he think that Quillin went down? There was no standing 8 count and he wasn't on the ropes defenseless.

To avoid getting knocked out or in this case getting knocked out on his feet. It's part of boxing. If you are hurt, you clinch or tie up to avoid getting knocked down or out. If you are unable to do that and are in a really bad way, you take a knee to gather your faculties and buy time. Inexperience or not being of sound mind due to being rattled cost fighters in the end and Pete was a victim of this exact circumstance.

Quillin showed heart but at the same time, inexperience. He wasn't able to defend himself and was eating a lot of leather. In this game the ref has to be the one to save a fighter from himself if he is too stubborn, too inexperienced or has too much determination to save himself. Fighters die when things happen like what Quillin went through. And Pete is good with the stoppage because he knew he was out of it and could have suffered severely had the ref not made the call to stop the fight.

He saw Pete eat a lot of shots and the clean, flush shot that put him out on his feet made his legs like jello. I'm sure he was about to give him a standing 8 but once he saw the eyes knew Quillin was no more good and call it.

Johnny, I hear ya, but these guys trained for 2-3 months.
Johnny, there was no standing 8 count. Dock thought that Quillin was going down after the two right hands and jumped in getting ready to put Jacobs in a neutral corner. Quillin didn't go down. You let the fight go on. You can't judge him unless he's getting pummeled into a stoppage and he has to stop the other fighter from landing. Who cares how his eyes looked...he was hit on the temple twice and stayed up. Who knows what happens next. Even Jacobs said that if he was a ref he would've let Quillin fight on.

Yeah, I don't like these early stoppages, let them have an opportunity to come back, if they don't they don't. That was for the championship, not in the backwater Minnesota chili circuit.

Let's hope HBO approves it as a PPV.

No chance in hell that Haymon feeds Jacobs to Golovkin for anything less than 3 mil.
