I just watched the `Thrilla in Manila` documentary for the very 1st time last night & **** me, Joe Frazier sure aint letting this thing go with Ali is he ? I heard that Joe still holds a grudge & I can understand why as even as an Ali fan, I know Ali went too far, Joe seems like a good man & didnt deserve that ****. I was a bit shocked just HOW MUCH of a grudge Joe still held.... his brother Tommy was speaking & he let us listen to Joe`s cell phone, it said something along the lines of.... `This is smoking Joe Frazier, sharp as a razor, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, you know who did that to him, that be me, call you later, bye` I might have got one or two words slightly wrong there as Im going from memory but most of it is correct if not all of it.... to have that on your cell phone at age 63, thats an insane amount of hate.
****in awesome doc.watched it last night, you should read his autobiography too,you would've thought he'd mellow to ali over the years, especially due to ali's numerous apologies.
I watched this last night with my missus, her comments were: "I didn't realise how horrible Muhammad Ali was". :yep
The general public see him as a saint, I imagine it would come as a shock to most to see the real Clay.
Regarding Ali's remarks towards Frazier during the 70's, I found them rather low and distasteful. But I must say that Frazier's comments years later that he made Ali like he is today, woooooow........I find that extremely offensive. Just not the type of thing any decent human should say about another. "`This is smoking Joe Frazier, sharp as a razor, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, you know who did that to him, that be me, call you later, bye` 'Tit for tat' is one thing, but I think Frazier has lowered himself below Ali with such a statement.
I watched it and was shocked how much he still hated Ali. Joe seems like a decent bloke....is he living in poverty or is it by choice I can't beleive he lost all his money. I was a little shocked to hear Joe say Ali is suffering because he was a nasty piece of work, although if Ali wasn't a virtual cabbage I guess he would still be talking **** Ali came across as a pretty awful individual. I was also shocked to see how small Joe looked.
ali was a cocky shite when he was a fighter and was particlarily coarse to frazier but he always apoligized after a fight to an opponent and all ali opponents have spoke fondly off him except frazier. frazier took these comments personally and has never forgiven ali (who did overstep the mark with joe). Now ali has a soft spot for joe and in interviews i have seen has only spoke good about him. i can see where joe is coming from in not liking ali and ali did overstep the mark but he should be forgivenas i think he genuinely didnt mean them remarks personally. but joe saying he cause alis illness is terrible. i just think joe is a little misunderstood as he couldnt forgive ali and has said that he cause the illness what is something i think joe would expect ali to say about him if he had parkinsons but IMO they are both as bad as each other and should forgive each other
How do you know Ali didn't mean it? Looking at Ali overall he does not seem to be a particularly nice man, he said some strange and bad things when he was able to speak coherently.
Are we here again? Yes, Ali said quite distateful and mean things. Not only to Frazier, but also to Liston, Patterson and Foreman - to name a couple. He belittled his opponents before fights, both as a way to promote the fight and as a way to mess with their heads. Against Frazier the whole backdrop gave his comments an even more sinister flair. BUT. After KO'ing for example Folley he took the microphone and told Folley's weeping son at ringside that his dad was OK and that he'd put up a great fight. Against MacFoster, Ellis, Al Lewis, Quarry and Lyle he intentionally held back when having them out on their feet, so as not to cause them permanent damage. How many fighters can you say this about? There are also many testimonies to his spontanous generosity against people in tight spots. So, if you're going to condemn Ali based on one quite biased documentary, then, please, get your ass back to General.
I honestly think it's pretty ****ing pathetic to hold a grudge this long over someone because they talked a bunch of **** and pulled a few over-the-top stunts.
he would mouth of at all oponents and then be on freindly terms with them after the fight but with frazier i think ali was intimitaded by joe and decided to really get under his skin and it worked but it was real nasty. but he has stated after the fight he has a soft spot for joe and is fond of him
I agree. Frazier forgot he was just an Uncle Tom who represented the interests of the white man. Dumb Gorilla.
As I get older, I realized that there are several different dimensions to Ali, one being that he is somewhat dysfunctional around certain people, I think he could have been intimidated by Joe, Joe had been through some strong stuff in his life, and wasn't going to take crap off of him.
