You are right, 2007 was truly great and it will be freakin' hard to surpass it... quantity, quality, history... But it's still March and great fights already so 2008 is very promising so far! Big rematches: Pavlik-Taylor II, JMM-PacMan II (III?), Mayweather-DLH II, Vazquez-Marquez III Important fights already fought or made: HW unification, CW unification, Dawson-Johnson, Kessler-Miranda, HOPKINS-CALZAGHE, Jones-Tito, Mijares-Munoz Possible fights: Cotto-Margarito, Calzaghe-Pavlik/Jones/Taylor, Haye vs. a HW champ, Vazquez-Arce, Calderon-Solis, Guerrero-Luevano, Gamboa vs. FW/SFW champ, Campbell-Diaz II, PacMan-JMMIII/Hatton(!), Barrera-Vazquez and who knows what in 9 months Rising to the top: Roman Gonzalez, Koki Kameda, Abner Mares, JuanMa Lopez, Gamboa, Khan, Peterson(s), Berto, Ortiz, Froch, Alexeev, Povetkin, Dimitrenko... So we'll see. 2008 is very promising so far...
As a 1-2 combo, I'm not sure another such pair of back-to-back years are likely in our lifetime. That is assuming you ignore the HW division.
I say 2007 will still be better because it brought the most attention to boxing that boxing had in a long time. For 2008 to have a chance, in my opinion, Floyd would have to fight Miguel Cotto. 2007 offered a "mega-fight" between DLH and Mayweather. The fight might not have reached the unfair expectations attributed to it, but it was an event. Also, 2007 had the emergence of Cotto who had to great and exciting fights against Judah and Mosley respectatively; the emergence of Kelly Pavlik with his three fights (Pavlik-Taylor I > Pavlik-Taylor II); TWO FIGHTS of Vasquez-Marquez; and Calzaghe establishing his reign over the SMW division by beating Kessler (which I think is more intriguing, relevant, and will be more competive than Calzaghe-Hopkins). Don't get me wrong, 2008 has been great thus far, but I still has a ways to go to catch 2007.
I don't care about mainstream attention for boxing. The greatness of Vazquez-Marquez III > the exposure of DLH-Mayweather.
True, but 2007 offered two great fights between Vazquez and Marquez. 2007 had mainstream appeal coupled with great fights.
I mentioned this the other week. 2007 was one of the best years for boxing in years, but I feel 2008 has its number. Had incredible fights so far this year, and with so long to go and with so many great fights already lined up, 2008 is surely going to be better. Boxing = best sport in the world.
