WOW That is truly amazing, this guy deserves alot more respect that he is given, the only other people i can think of with more fights in a span of 2 years are the greats Willie Pep who had 32, Ray Robinson who had 27, and Henry Armstron who had 22 aswell, there might be a few old fighters from that time who have alot like that aswell, but for a fighter in James Toney area... i dont think you are going to find anyboyd like him, only Mike Tyson who fought 28 times. Tyson fought more in his first 2 years. One of the things I really liked about Toney, and Chavez for that matter, is that once they became champs, they still fought very often.
Its not all that unusual for a fighter starting out. Ive heard Toney say he rates Sanderline Williams as one of his best wins though :good
It had a lot to do with Toneys management, they knew he wasnt a natural middleweight (he weighed 205 as a high school footballer) - he had be in fighting shape to keep his weight down.
How about this??? James Toney BEAT (McCallum he drew with): Merquis Sosa (Good Fighter) Alberto Gonzales (Bum) Michael Nunn (Champion) Reggie Johnson (Champion) Fransesco Dell'Aquia (Bum) Mike McCallum (Champion) ALL IN THE SAME YEAR!!! And 3 of the fights were after he beat Michael Nunn for the IBF Middleweight title!
He fought 3 legitimate champions, 2 bums, and 1 contender in the span of 1 year....that's impressive still.
His resume's awesome. . . . Michael Nunn Reggie Johnson Mike McCallum x2 Iran Barkley Charles Williams Vassily Jirov Evander Holyfield And if you count the Griffin defeats and first Peter loss as wins then. . .
hes trully old schooll you can see he enjoys being in the ring hes always relaxed in there, outside the ring is where he has problems with his discipline and some anger problems.
He also was caught for roids TWICE...once may be a mistake but twice in 3 years proves he's a cheat. He shoudln't be talked about.
