WOW !!!!! I was out last night and have only just watched the fight, Mares clearly underestimated his opponent. He was too aggressive and casual and he's paid the price, the first left hand was an absolute peach.
Calm down, we had less than a round to see these two, it was a very good win for Gonzalez but you can't say that he had him all figured out from the get go.
You can never underestimate a guy like Gonzalez. Back in the day when he fought Vasquez, he was winning the fight nearly one-sided before the KO. He was always near the top and his power and size always made him a dangerous opponent for anyone. I had a bad feeling for Mares going into the fight. He was fighting a bigger guy with a lot of power. The outcome shouldn't surprise anyone.
I was never a big fan of Mares after the Agbeko fight, and then all of a sudden people started hyping him up. I was expecting this to be a good close fight but WOW Mares got KTFO!!!!
When Nacho said Mares want gonna last 6 rounds I knew he had a gme plan since he's not a trainer to hype his fighters like that but DAMN! I didn't expect that
The problem with Mares is that his offense is really his defense. He's been down before against other fighters and if he got hit with something hard enough, he may not recover...and he didn't tonight. The difference between guys like Kovalev, Golovkin & Matthysee and a guy like Mares is that they protect their chins well and Mares don't. Mares' style is great against boxers, but not against boxer-punchers...especially ones with power. He got hit flush a lot against Ponce De Leon, but De Leon throws a bit wide and Mares saw the punches coming. Against a crisp puncher like Gonzalez, all it needed was 1 clean connect.
