hey so i have this problem when i throw punches on the heavy bag often my wrists bends up or down on impact. i could kindof feel this with my wraps and gloves on so today i tried bareknuckle and sure enough my wrists really do bend quite a bit. btw my heavy bag is really really hard, but still **** that. are there any exercises i can do to rectify this? i make a conscious effort to keep my fist strong and all but it doesn't seem to have an effect on the wrist.
Just what I was thinking. My wrists aren't that sore after a workout, the only time I ever noticed an acute soreness is when I was throwing my punches wrong(bad technique or bad aim) and ended up bending my wrist on the bag. Today I was tired by the end of the last few heavy rounds, my technique starts to get poor and I bent my wrist once or twice, reminding me to focus and concentrate even while I'm heaving for air through my shoulders.
hey another thing, are you supposed to voluntarily bend your wrists in a certain way when throwing certain punches? my trainer tells me to slightly bend my wrist downward when throwing jabs and straights, and slightly inward during hooks. is this rubbish?
Do you think a few degrees of rotation will really make a difference in the punches power with boxing gloves on? When you spar, you will be wearing 16 oz. gloves and if you climb in the ring for even an amateur fight, they will be lighter but still well padded. I'm a firm believer in keeping the wrist as stationary as possible and not flexing it. There is your reason for all the wrist pain.
Your larger punching muscles and desire are progressing faster than your wrist stabilizing muscles. Wrapping your wrists in "casts" to support them will NOT help your cause. If anything it will continue the process of getting you out of balance... one hard hook or uppercut on the bag and you will have a REAL injury. To fix it, do pull ups trying to keep a tight grip around the bar. Hang on the bar until failure with your fingertips. Do knuckle push ups (on a soft surface) and consciously stabilize your wrist. I would also suggest putting on a light pair of leather gloves and LIGHTLY working the bag with the focus on keeping your fist tight like a rock and impacting on the proper knuckle surface. In all of that remember ALWAYS save enough to bang the bag again the next day. Overdoing it will hurt you or make you rest too long. As for "bending the wrist for certain punches" I think that a boxer should naturally cant his wrist slightly down (toward the inside) to present the knuckles before the finger joint and put the knuckles in line with the forearm. Not sure if that is true, but take from it what you will.
if your front 2 knuckles arent directly behind your wrist i could see how it would hurt on a thick heavy bag. with that being said i have to have some of the smallest wrists in the history of man but i dont get sore at all. also wrapping up proper helps
i have no trouble doing knuckle pushups on any surface, thats why this annoys me, i shouldnt have problems like this
