Tonights week 7 fixture is streamed, as always, live & legally on www.worldseriesboxing.com & on their youtube channel. Teams. Bantumweight. Riccardo D'Andrea vs Sean McGoldrick Lightweight. Domenico Valentino vs Josh Taylor Middleweight. Vincenzo Mangiacapre vs Kaupo Arro Light Heavyweight. Abdelhafid Benchabla vs Joseph Ward Heavyweight. Clemento Russo vs Uaine Fa
D'Andrea is the current Italian champion & is making his WSB debut. Valentino is highly experienced & was the 2009 world champion, he has fought in both previous seasons of WSB & has a record of 7-2. Mangiacapre is another highly decorated amatuer who won bronze at the worlds in 2011 & last years Olympics in the light-welterweight division. This is his first year in WSB & he won his only fight in week 1. The Algerian, Benchabla was the WSB individual champion in 2011 & has a 12(2)-3 record. He's been to several major tournaments & gave the excellent Gvodzyk a tough fight in the 2012 Olympics. Russo was the heavyweight world champion in 09 & won silver at both Bejing & London. He has also fought in both previous WSB seasons & boasts a perfect 16(1)-0 record.
Great preview. Russo won World's in 2007, in 2009 they were held in Italy and he lost at home in the QF to Mekhontsev who won Gold, although Usyk got robbed against Egor in the SF. My picks McGoldrick - haven't seen D'Andrea but McG has 2 decent wins already Valentino - Val is more skilled and i expect him to win but Josh is good and has a big height advantage which could pose problems. May be close. Mangiacapre - Mang is more skilled but he fights at 64kg and is undersized for MW in WSB. Arro's pressure and strength is exactly the thing needed to bother Mang's style so this one could go either way. Ward - Really looking forward to this fight as Benchabla is a quality LHW, tough and should apply pressure and force Ward to fight. He did lose to the German Michel recently who was able to beat him with counter punching but Benchabla made him work for it. Russo - Should be able to pot shot and slap his way to victory. Fa's a SHW, well rounded and pretty athletic though so it shoud be fairly competitive.
I like McGoldrick, he's been very effective in this format so far & will be tough to beat though Ive never seen his opponent before. Valentino is quality & Taylor will need to put in a great performance to get the decision, seems unlikely but it should be competitive. Arro looked a bit slow & clumsy last week but he seems to be strong & tough, the size difference & clash of styles make this hard to call. Ward has cruised through every single fight so far without losing a round, its his first away fight in WSB & against his best opponent so far. Its the fight I'm most looking forward to, I hope Ward gets pushed hard & shows his class. I'm not a fan of Russo but he'll probably be too crafty & will spoil his way to an unconvincing victory in a **** fight, as always.
About 5 min Yeah, he really had to battle hard in an ugly, scrappy fight. McGoldrick wins on points 49-46, 48-47x2 1-0 GB
