There's learning the ropes (metaphorically and literally) - and then, ideally much later, there's applying those years worth of honed craft and strictly regulated & supervised competition in parity with other kids your own size and relative age into hard sparring, and then ultimately the next & final step of going pro.

Mayweather and other early starters like him, in this country, wore headgear, fought exclusively other children matched carefully within like weight & dimensions of physicality, and was never put in a situation where it was basically human cockfighting and they were just ripping into each other while uncaring adults leered on placing bets. The latter is what passes for a Thai amateur scene.

We were born the same month, IB. Jesus Christ, Joan of Arc, Alexander the Great, Mozart, Kurt Kobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Hank Williams, Sam Cooke, Jim Croce, Franz Schubert, Patsy Cline, Tupac, John Keats, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, George Buchner, Christopher Marlowe, Emily Bronte, Bruce Lee, Heath Ledger, James Dean, Yuri Gagarin, Chris Farley, Masaccio, and Giorgione, were all dead by our age.

I wasted time, now time wastes me.

I think Barrera could have started off in 1992 hitting the ground running against the likes of Josefino Suarez (or comfortably reaching that point within 3 fights or so) without skipping a beat. I'm not really sure facing the likes of David Felix, Federico Lara x2, Ignacio Jacome, Oscar Granados, Sebastian Amica, Pedro Martinez, Jose Yanez, Ivan Salazar, Esteban Rodriguez, Abel Hinojosa, Juan Facundo Lopez, Jaime Rojas, Sergio Aguila, Javier Diaz, and Miguel Pina with their combined 81-65-5 record informed him becoming the ATG he did. I doubt he needed that many tomato cans to learn enough to become what he became. It could have been a far more truncated process, beginning in the early 90's rather than in 1989, with MAB still carving out pretty much the same career.

    Serious question.....

I don't watch any Thai Boxing, but do they ever have any transgender issues?

E.g. Can you be born a man, have a sex change, and fight as a woman?

There was a fairly well known case over a decade ago with a MtF named Nong Toom. That they have issues with, they don't let the transgender females fight real females. Rightfully so in my opinion, it could be dangerous, sadly they don't extend those concerns to children.

Eh, I think everyone knew in advance, no? There was controversy around it for sure but no sneakiness IIRC. You might be conflating it with the Olympic...runner, I want to say? I want to say her name, weirdly on the nose as it was, actually contained the word "semen".. :dunno

    Shouldn't be an issue tbh.

Given the 'Gender Neutral' and 'Gender Equality' movements it wont be long til we get to see David Price knocked out by a fat chick.

Caster Semenya was a woman on the outside... barely, but had balls in her vagina. She had AIS, but she wasn't transgender.

    'Nong Toom'

I can't see a Euphemism there, but there's something funny about it.

A female boxer who's had balls anywhere near her vagina is probably not female.....

No, she was an Olympic runner, she was born with Androgen Insensitivity Disorder, which means on the outside she looks fully female, including having breasts and a vagina, but she has the XY chromosomal make up of a man, as far as the balls are concerned, balls start out as ovaries, all men are born women, and evolve in the womb to a man, see the progression, the XX morphs into XY. But with people with AIS, they start turning into a guy, their ovaries turn into testicles, their chromosomes change, but then it stops, so they're caught inbetween.
