World heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has claimed that Lennox Lewis is considering a comeback.

More StoriesKlitschko: Haye needs two fights
Lewis, the former undisputed heavyweight champion, retired after beating Klitschko in 2003 and has always maintained he has no interest in returning to the ring.

But Klitschko is spoiling for a re-match and told Sportsweek on BBC Radio 5 Live that he has heard Lewis could be on the comeback trail.

"I heard Lennox Lewis is starting to think about his comeback," Klitschko said. "Who knows? I have shown him a good example. I made my comeback after four years and took the world title.

"Nothing is impossible. Lennox Lewis promised me - and like a gentleman, I hope he keeps his word - and everybody who saw the first fight can see the second fight.

"The fight was stopped because I had a huge cut in my eye, but I was ready to beat Lennox. It was a difficult fight in my history.

"I never proved my skills against a strong fighter. If Lennox announces an official decision that would be great."

New British heavyweight David Haye is one of many, however, who do not believe Lewis will come out of retirement - nor does he want him to.

"It is the fight he [Klitschko] has been screaming about after he got stopped on a brutal cut from Lennox Lewis. But I can't see that happening," said Haye.

"He [Lewis] is my idol because he got out of the game at the right time with his faculties intact. It would be a shame if he came back to boxing after such a long lay-off to taint his legacy."

If Klitschko cannot line up a rematch with Lewis he would like a shot at Haye, after being impressed by his victory over Monte Barrett.

Haye was fighting for the first time since moving up from cruiserweight and he knocked the American down four times before sealing victory in the fifth round.

"The heavyweight division has a crisis. Who is the strongest? My brother Wladimir [IBF, WBO, IBO world champion] and me and who else? Heavyweight needs strong names, good fighters.

"I saw a new heavyweight fighter who can fight for a world title. I was very impressed - it is not so easy to go from cruiserweight to heavyweight, because it is different power.

"David Haye makes it brilliant. If I fight Lennox Lewis then maybe Wladimir fights David Haye.

"If not then I am interested in a fight - maybe next spring or next summer, here in Great Britain or in Germany. I am interested to prove my skills against a new generation."

Klitschko advised Haye may need two more fights before he is ready for a title shot - while Frank Bruno believes he could need four.

Haye wants a world title shot as soon as possible.

"Who else can test me? Not that many guys out there. It wouldn't do me any harm to get another fight, but in heavyweight when an opportunity arises you have to grab it with both hands," he said.

"If an opportunity comes up I will take it. Realistically it would be mid-to-late next year - and I will probably have one other fight before then, in about March."

    He really is.

So Kiltschko "heard" Lewis is coming back? Yawn. I heard that same thing in 2004. Let the man stay retired and do awkward commentary on HBO boxing matches.

He said the same on Sentanta, and all the jaws in the room looked like they were going to hit the floor.

Vitaly has to be looking at the mega payday because he must realize that it would be unlikely that: a) Lewis would regain form; and b) Vitaly would be given much credit for the win (even if Lewis looks pretty good)

Having seen a recent picture of Lennox Lewis, I can officially say the only thing he's coming back for is 2nds.

I'm happy Lewis is retired and I hope he stays retired.
However it would be very funny if he came back, beat Vitali by TKO on cuts, and retired again :D :D

No Way Lewis wins without taking a warm-up fight or two. Vitali is no Samuel Peter !

That said I feel it is unlikely this fight will happen.

Klitscko need to focus in the fighters that are currently calling him out like Haye and Gomez and forget about Lewis.
First Lewis is retired for a very long time he is out of shape, and his skill are not the same, even if Lewis comeback and Klitchsko maange to beat him , no one even his fans are not going to praise him only critizice him for fighting an ancient inactive fighter. Please Lewis don't make a comeback stay retired fo the good of the sport.

Vitali is merely trying to taunt Lewis into giving into is massive ego and come back. But I don't think he will.

Haye though, may take another fight before a titleshot. I find that odd, that he'd risk such a big payday when he would not gain much from it, and would risk losing the big payday fight, if he didn't win his stay busy fight.

And given that his is the heavywieghts, one good crack to Haye's jaw, and its over............there goes the big payday and all this aura he's built.

I think he ought to go right for Vitali, as he seems to want to do.
