False. There is all kinds of footage of him jumping rope, running and hitting the bag.

...........I would buy the no lifting weights story. That was something you simply did not do as a fighter then. Very frowned upon. Lifting weights in this sport is a pretty new thing. I mean, it was considered taboo as recent as the 80's, when I became interested.

Well, back then calisthenics pretty much meant pushups and pullups. I'm sure he did pushups, not so sure about pullups. I doubt he lifted weights, as weightlifting wasn't even popular at all back then and even less in boxing.

In the old school running and sparring was the bread and butter..

If you read Joe Frazier's book on boxing technique, he recommends not touching weights at all either. Calisthenics and cardio-type exercises can give you all the conditioning you need, aside from actual boxing workouts.

It should not shock you guys too much. According to Mike Tyson's handlers from the early days and in his prime Mike Never touched the weight as well. All he did was calisthenics. I find that hard to believe.

I know people like Shannon Briggs lifts weights. That is obvious.

I heard that about Ali, all pressups / sit-ups etc. Im trying to do less weights more of this stuff myself, just seems more natural i dunno

i never found weights helpful. thats just my personal preference. the time i could spend lifting weights is more time i could spend doing boxing specific workouts. just my point of view.

but onto thread subject. yes. i would believe sugar ray robinson never lifted weights. but i wouldnt believe he never did a push up. or pull up. or sit up.

push ups are ok to start with, but with increasing repetitons it just becomes a non specific endurance excercise unsuitable for boxing
the muscles involved do not even even need endurance
a more specific method for strength would be to perform one arm dumbell presses which imitates a straight punch,(also one arm push ups) and for endurance punch with dumbells for the deltoids and upper back which are constantly under tension to a degree and fatigue the most (along with the legs)

the dumbells would only help you get stronger. and the force of a punch if done correctly goes toes, hips, and shoulders to the fist most of the power doesnt come from the fist or the arm.. therefore doing push ups seems to me to be more usefull in strenghening the shoulders than lifting weights. and you want to keep increasing repition for endurance. shadow boxing with dumbells yes. but a one armed press doesnt seem to be as helpful as a push up would.

take a medicine ball and throw it up against a wall as you woudl throw a punch. or pass it between two people.

i could think of a million medicine ball excercises that would be more beneficial to boxing than lifting weights.

somebody correct me if i am wrong.

I would think bench press lockouts in the power rack might be better here.I feel the bottom part of some heavy pressing movement(ie. bench presses or standard overhead press) overdevelops the muscles at the shoulder girdle. When punching ,you might find your punches being pulled in the direction of the pressing movement. There is this danger of what Manny Steward referred to as "punching in the groove".
