I just watched the Lee vs. Vera fight. What the **** kind of stoppage was that? Vera cracked him with a right, Lee fired a punch back and then the ref stopped the fight. I've never seen a fighter get stopped right after he hits his opponent flush.
One of the WORST stoppages I've seen in awhile. Jeez, let the fight go to its natural conclusion, will ya - like they did in the old days. Today's refs are WAY too quick to pull the trigger.
The ref could have let it go on but Lee's face was a mess and he looked knackered. Vera doesn't believe in defense though and won't get far. Vera took alot of big shots and has a very good chin and plenty of heart. The thing is if Lee had thrown a right hand after his big left (which couldn't miss), then he probably could have gotten Vera out of there earlier. Also when Lee got cut he then spent alot of the time fighting on the inside - Why? (Steward had instructed him to use the jab) For all the big left hands that he took and was being constantly staggered, Vera didn't have a mark on him. The guy has a lot of heart, a good chin and is tough but he has no defense whatsoever. If they had a rematch then I would favour Lee to win if he's learnt from his mistakes. He needed to jab more and punch in combinations and not look for the one big punch all the time (hard to resist as Vera was such an open target). The one thing that annoys me with these fighters is that they have Emmanuel Steward in the corner telling them what to do and they don't listen (Jermain Taylor was the same). No point having the best trainer in the World in your corner, if your going to fight your own fight. This was a huge learning fight for Lee and while a defeat is not good he should comeback better for the experience.
Just watched the whole fight; the stoppage was strange because Lee had punched back quite well just before, but the referee did well to stop the fight. Lee was getting beat up badly and he would have been seriously hurt had the fight been left to carry on. The lad has too much heart to give up and is too honest to hug and hold for dear life. Had the referee let it go on, Lee would have been stopped either later on in the round or in the next round and he would have been very damaged. This was not a Championship fight with all on the line. Lee clearly needs to learn quite a few things before he is to be considered a serious contender. Had the fight not been stopped then, his whole career might have gone down the drain. It's better this way, for him. Good luck to the lad in future; he has a lot of heart, as had his opponent, Vera, who gave it his all and proved a very good chin too!:good
Horrible stoppage one of the worst I've seen. This ref should never be allowed in the ring again. The fight was a war and Vera was getting the best of Lee in that round but it shouldn't have been stopped...**** he hit Vera and the ref waved it off.
The only thing I can add to this is "Where was Lee's protest?". I have literally seen fighters 'hopping mad' at a stoppage. Lee gave a little hand gesture. That is all he had left. He was ready to sit down on his stool. Bottom line for me.
he was going down anyways, but yeah the ref just robbed us from an spectacular knockdown, it was just a matter of time...
Indeed. You wouldn't see a top line ref making that kind of mistake. A good ref would at least have waited for VERA to land a punch after Lee threw his!! atsch
Horrible timing, but not a horrible stoppage. There wouldn't have been a complaint if he had stopped the fight 15 seconds earlier, or if he had waited until Vera landed his next flurry to stop the fight. Lee was seriously hurt and should have taken a knee to avoid the stoppage, but he just wasn't experienced enough to make that call. As bad as the timing was, the stoppage just might have saved his career.
totally agree with your quote. but the stoppage prob should of been about 10 secs or so earlier if the ref was so concerned.. simply saying that because at the point of stoppage, it seemed to me that andy was bout to get his bearings back. regardless, im sure andy lee will bounce back pretty strong from this experience..
