i think you should also take into account the biased ref in that first PM vs NDou fight. Paulie's best defensive move that night was the ref splitting up the fighters every time they got within 12 inches of each other. In the rematch NDou showed that they are actually very evenly matched.
No one should have ever agreed to this unconditional rematch clause in the first place. Why isn't it possible to agree on a rematch clause only if certain conditions are met.....i.e, like a competitive first fight. We should not be subject to mismatches because of fine print technicalities, that could be avoided with some foresight. Right now what we are forced to watch is a spent fighter, basically cashing in on his name alone and wasting a talented young fighter's precious time to prove himself against better comp. In the long run, this kind of stuff will hurt HBO and boxing as a whole. I hate the Tarver's and the Golden Boy's of boxing precisely because of this. Boxing should create an overarching, powerful oversight organization or a commissioner (like in all other Pro sports) who would put an end to these money sucking, time wasting mismatches.
This fight was waaaaaaaaaaaayy to 1 sided to warrent a rematch, someone should burn that ****ing rematch contractatsch.. Dawson will stop AT in the rematch, Tarver is 40 and done, the last fight he had nothing, Dawson is only getting better..
From my understanding of this situation, although there is a rematch clause, it does not require it to be an immediate rematch, and that Dawson might be actually vacating his IBF belt to do this rematch right now instead of fighting his mandatory, Tavaris Cloud, despite that fact. I can understand him not wanting to risk messing up his 2 fight HBO contract with a potential loss to Cloud, but as things are right now, neither BHop or Calzaghe seem at all interested in Dawson and fighting a rematch with Tarver would do absolutely nothing to promote his status or further draw their interest. Nor would dropping belts instead of unifying them. All it really does is put the HBO hype machine behind him. From a financial stand-point I can see a justification for this move, but from a career and reputation stand-point, I don't see how this helps him as its really hard to call this anything but cherry-picking especially when considering that he's already dropped his WBC belt and a bigger payday against Diaconu and took a financial loss to face Tarver the first time, and you still have Glen Johnson out there who in everyone's eyes is more deserving of the rematch. Dawson's paid a financial price before in an attempt to, as what he saw, further his career. Why not now? I think its pretty obvious Tarver is only looking for a payday be it a fight or step aside money and with this move Dawson seems perfectly content to bide time until the other old guys retire. If Dawson was really interested in getting a match-up between Hop or JC, he should be pursuing RJJ or Kessler at catchweight. If he could land the RJJ fight, it would most likely give him enough money to pay off Tarver and an impressive win would definitely goad one of those 2 guys into a fight. And people wouldn't mind so much that's he's vacating belts and avoiding mandatories because he'd be aggressively pursuing the top guys of the division. What I don't understand is why on Earth would HBO not be interested in Tavaris Cloud who's style is far more entertaining and potentially more profitable than that of Dawson?
A rematch claus is what it is. Same result Dawson UD 12. Its what Dawson does after the rematch that really matters. Tarver could pull off the upset but I doubt it.
Funny ****, the power players in boxing are never interested in what we think, they're too busy flirting with the marketplace. HBO thinks that having Dawson beat up on Tarver again will be a good showcase to the public. The best one that was available.
You said it all. We can only hope it is at least a bit competitive, the only thing that could bring hope is what Scar said about Tarver having never lost a rematch. Well, this will be his first rematch to lose, we'll have to see if it is competitive. If Kessler fights Dawson I would be surprised in a positive way.
Me too. Just that some claims that Kessler ducks Dawson. Well if Dawson was obligated to fight Tarver next ?
