H2H, the best four welterweights of those four decades.

If they were in a mini-league where they had to fight each other once, who would emerge as the top dog?

The more detailed the answer the better, but all comments welcome! :good

    :bbb

ps: I have cheated a bit including Leonard as my choice from the 1970s instead of someone such as Napoles, but the Leonard of the Benitez fight in '79 was a great fighter, and selecting Leonard will surely stimulate more debate in this forum as more people know Leonard than someone such as Napoles, and I'm sure many people have an opinion on whether Tommy Hearns was a better fighter h2h at ww given how their fight went before the stoppage.

i think whitaker should'nt be in this conversation. WW was'nt really his best weight. he'd be more suited to a "LW tournament of the decades best" thread. i think he gets beat by the 3. hearns would most likely KO him.

in regards to the thread hearn's was always one of my favorite firghters, so i may be biased towards him. i think if he and SRL fought 10 times they'd win 5 a piece. griffith's toughness could be the difference maker if they fought. this a guy who stood up to monzon's punishment only getting stopped controversially. he'd probably edge hearns close UD to late KO, especially in a 15 rounder. i'd pick SRL to come out on top of this tournament. i think his style is bad for griffith, splits fights with hearns and UD's the underseized whitaker.

Cant comment on Griffith but on a 15 rd H2H basis Id rank the other 3 as such.....

    Leonard
    Hearns
    Whitaker

Both SRL & Hearns would be too big & powerfull for Whitaker, especially Hearns, he would be all wrong stylistically for Pea IMO with the long reach, the speed & breathtaking power.

Leonard WAS behind vs Hearns, that is correct, but Ray took Tommy`s punch better than vice versa & showed more grit & championship material when it mattered most, that in my mind was always was separated Leonard & Hearns.

If they had a rematch, whether it be 12 or 15 rds, I dont see Ray falling that far behind again, I see him testing Tommy`s heart early, making it a battle of wills right away & in their primes, there will only be one winner IMO... Ray Leonard.

Taking into account I havent seen much of Griffith.... my vote is Leonard as best of the bunch.

    :thumbsup

I am going to say Leonard, just because I believe he was slightly the best of that group. That's not a very intellectual answer, but it's as best as I can put it.

Emmile Griffith really interests me. I want to know more about him, but the footage is limited. He has a lot of losses on boxrec, but he seems to be fighting above of his weight a lot. Some people call him the best welterweight ever? Must have been good.

Of course Whitaker's best weight in lw, but this is an h2h discussion of each decade. Do you think any ww from the 1990s would have beaten the Whitaker of 1993 who beat Chavez and Buddy McGirt?? I don't.

Napoles was the best welterweight of the 1970s, Einstein. The General forum's a joke.

Im sure he pointed out at the start that he would use Leonard rather than Napoles as most would be more familiar with SRL + he liked Leonard`s 1979 performance over Benitez at WWT.

Yet another arrogant imbecile who comments without actually reading the start of the thread. I will repeat for you -

ps: I have cheated a bit including Leonard as my choice from the 1970s instead of someone such as Napoles, but the Leonard of the Benitez fight in '79 was a great fighter, and selecting Leonard will surely stimulate more debate in this forum as more people know Leonard than someone such as Napoles, and I'm sure many people have an opinion on whether Tommy Hearns was a better fighter h2h at ww given how their fight went before the stoppage.

No he wouldn't, because he would be weight-drained to **** making it into a ww tournament, so he would lose to all four most probably.
