Have you seen the footage? He's really not very good. I mean, his main attributes involve being extra large, strong and tough. I will also concede that he had a lot of heart. But let's be honest, if you transplanted him "as is" to the current era he'd lose every fight until a proper coach taught him what's what.

I disagree w/ those descriptions of Willard's defense. Johnson was winning the early rnds on his aggressiveness, but he wasn't particularly accurate - a lot of his attempted flurries were partially blocked, smothered, or leaned away from.

I think Willard deserves credit for a long-term strategy aimed @ wearing down Johnson by keeping him backpedaling away from his jab & long rights to the body & then forcing him to lunge & reach to try to land his own punches.

He was losing his title fight 25-0. If it is set for any normal roundage Willard doesn't win that title.

I agree he was one tough guy kept getting up against Dempsey and did go 26 rounds with a fading Jack Johnson before getting the ko. He did kill one opponent. I see him being too tough and too strong for Wilder.

If Wilder had been there in his place, he would've KO'd himself.

If the fight wasn't a 45 rounder it wouldn't have mattered though.
