To me, Thompson has that "it" that is hard to quantify. He keeps winning and winning and after he does you don't know that he does any one thing really great but he does most things well. He's not the most hittable heavyweight, I've never seen him hurt in any of his recent fights, he throws a lot of punches, he's not feather-fisted by any stretch yet he's no Earnie Shavers, he is a good in-fighter, he's not blazing but to call him slow would be an injustice, he uses the jab to set up his combos (and how many heavies actually throw combos) and he seems to impose his will on his opponents. I like Wlad and hope he wins but Thompson is very much a live underdog in my mind. I just can't get Wlad's reaction to every solid shot Peter hit him with out of my mind. Now, now, haters, relax, I'm not saying Thompson hits anywhere nearly as hard as Peter (he's an average heavyweight puncher), but he does have some pop and at 250 lbs. he can hurt Wlad and even stop him if Wlad allows him to get inside. I'm leaning towards Wlad but won't be surprised at all if we have a new champion after tomorrow night. I would be surprised if Wlad blows Thompson out though. I see a tactical, competitve fight regardless of what happens. I think Thompson is being undersold. Just my 2 cents.
It's nice to see somone hyping Thompson but in all honesty, from what I have seen, they will be scraping him off the canvas tomorrow - and I am no Wlad fan.
Well you're right about one thing, Thompson is no Earnie Shavers. Thompson will be very lucky to even make this the tiniest bit competitive.
I, too, feel he is being underated on the forum. However, I will be very surprised if we have a new champion. Some observations. - he doesn't punch his weight. - he doesn't have fast feet, but he has good ring-sense and decent movement which makes him highly mobile. - combined with his excellent reach this makes him a decent general by default - he has decent handspeed. I've been saying this for a week now, and I knoew I am in the minority, but i think his punches in bunches are faster than Wlad's. I was interested to see an article in Ring the day before yesterday picking Thompson as having faster hands... - solid chin - good jab - he has an odd style and is a southpaw The problem is, he rellies upon his jab but should be thoroughly outjabbed here. But he's a good fighter, better than most guys are giving him credit for.
Thompson is a very good fighter. Plus he is a southpaw which can cause anyone problems. Only thing is, he is terribly slow and also has terrible movement...most importantly terrible head movement. Meaning he is GOING to be there for Wlad to hit. I just dont see him winning.
good post. i agree too. but at the end of the day wlad's going to be able to impose himself and open up without worrying about any "sam peter's" coming back at him. allowing wlad that luxury allows him to flex his outstanding knockout power.
No, no I'm not having a go or anything. I just think Thompson is too slow and doesn't hit with enough umph to give Wlad a huge deal of trouble. He just doesn't seem to fight with any urgency and Wlad can be accurate and hurtful when given time to get his punches off. This fight will be reduced to target practice after 4 rounds if you ask me. I hope I'm wrong.
I agree that he has slow FEET but his hands aren't slow and neither are his relfexes. I don't see him getting hit all that often. Krasniqui missed him constantly and he walked him down and wore him down. I think Thompson's skills are subtle but they are there. He knows how to fight and in my mind he's supremely confident. He'll not run around the ring like Igragimov did. Wlad will be tested in my mind.
thompson is roadkill. hey is your avy of brewster from the wlad rematch? i remember he had a gold robe...he's fighting in august again. nice to see him back. as long as he avoids wlad, he's still a player imo. one of the most exciting fighters in the higher weights the past few years......
:good Yeah, it's from the Klitschko rematch and for some reason I just ****ing love the picture. You can find the fight pictures (where I got the avatar from) on ESB. I'll dig up a link if you like. Brewster was one of the most exciting fighters post Lewis. A live underdog that was good to watch. I didn't realise he was back next month, that's great news. I thought he had expired after the eye damage.
Anything Tompson does aside from laying on his back tommorow night in the middle of the ring will be an acomplishment. When we expect so little and get a little more than we bargained for we always seem to give that more credit than it deserves. If Tompson throws and lands a couple we are going to have a lot of guys smelling upset... until he get ktfo by a 1-2 combo.
Guess time will tell, if Wlad gets stopped here I think his career will be winding down shortly after, but its un likely I do see Thompson making things interesting early the question is how does Thompson react when he gets hit, if he can handle it Wlad will be in for a long nights work.
