Yama Bahama (Another overlooked TV fighter from 50's, early 60's)

Once again showing the depth of the WW's & MW's of that era:

    77 wins 14 losses 3 draws.
Was duking it out with Kid Gavilan, Griffith, Luis Rodriquez, Joey Giambra,
Gil Turner. Better than just "an opponent" like you have on TV today.

    nationality Bahamas
    death date 2009-06-29 / age 76

Thanks for this Longhhorn....Yama Bahama has never been graced by a thread about him.

When you are 10 years old, and you hear his name come out of a black & white, round screen, rabbit-eared TV, on Friday Night Fights, then you never forget it.

So true! And as another 10-year old from that era, I remember him as a tall, thin boxer constantly throwing out that left jab. My grandfather told me, commenting on his jabs, "Every one of them counts." And sure enough, he won that fight, (although I don't recall who he was fighting that night) as well as every other fight I remember seeing him in.

Hey Red! The thread was a good shout out to a damn good fighter. Brings back memories of my threads about Jose Gonzalez who fought Yama; I've always been fascinated by the guy! 44-20 (I think). Turned pro at WW in the late fifties moving to LH before retiring in the early 70's. Fought a plethora of top welters, middles, and LH's during his career. Some bad losses, some good losses, some good wins, some great wins. Stopped the 'hurricane' in his prime. Folks should go on boxrec and look at his record. Closed out his career in the early 70's with UD losses to Galindez and Kates at light heavy.

Jose Torres started as a MW in the same era. Jose Stable....and the rest of "those guys".

He's a fighter I end up going to on boxrec fairly often and really wondering about.

A blown up welterweight stopping Ruben Carter is a pretty fantastical accomplishment, in my opinion.

Don't remember seeing Yama Bahama being promoted heavily in the movie "The Hurricane" re: Ruben Carter.
    (lol).

Should have had a cameo, I'm personally still bitter with the creators of the movie we didn't get a sly Yama Bahama appearance.
