Has anyone seen him fight? I missed him this last friday....ive heard he's an excellent boxer and a great prospect. Thoughts from those of you who have seen him?
Ive seen him fight twice. Very solid prospect. Nowhere near the level of his countryman Yuriorkis Gamboa, but still a good prospect. Needs to work on his defense a little. Definitely a counterpuncher/defensive fighter. Not going to knock a ton of people out. Still hasn't fought real good competition so it's hard to say, but they plan on having him fight several times this year.
Are you kidding his defense was great last friday. He holds his gloves up high and blocks almost everything. He got hit sometimes but thats because he was toying with the other guy. I thought his defense is what stood out. If Gamboa had that type of defense he would be unstoppable.
I don't think he has much of a future. He's featherfisted and his offense is very sloppy, especially for a gold medalist in his late 20's with a very good amateur background. His defense is leaky and he tends to get careless/frustrated pretty often. Judging by the way he fights and reacts to F-level pressure, I think he has a weak chin. Pretty good boxing/counterpunching skills and speed, but other than that there's nothing special about him.
Yan is way past his prime. And looking at the weightclass he is fighting in he is very very old. Wanna see him in his peak? Omg he was masterful, the footwork, the handspeed, just fenomenal:shock: Take a look at youtube, in the Athens final against the Turk.
He is a really skillfull fighter, maybe more than Gamboa but not by much, the thing that makes Gamboa so especial is his speed and athletic abilitites, so Gamboa is way better overall, but back in the day in cuba Barthelemy was the guy to always beat Gamboa in the Cuban Championships, 3 years he beat him actually, so he is a very good prospect believe me.
Based on what i've heard of him so far, it doesn't really seem like this guy has been able to turn his style into that of a professional yet, which is always a danger when a guy has had such a ridiculous amount of amateur fights, his style is totally attuned to the computer-point system.
Hmm you might/probably have a very good point here. He can win a belt imo.. but how and when? I don't know.
