Yes that motivational stuff is great at the beginning when you're boxing to stay away from gangs and crime. But this is the big leagues, if it's true that he got no real sparring in the lead up to a fight of this magnitude I'm not investing anymore emotion or time for someone that stupid.

Would Buatsi, Burton or Buglioi have fared any better? I know the latter has now retired but I think of the current crop of Brit LHW boxers only Callum Johnson would have probably seen that out. I know he was well beaten in the end but for a brief moment the unthinkable nearly happened, Kovalev was close to being stopped and his corner were close to taking him out of there. Yarde can come again, he needs to work on a few things and his inexperience was there for everyone to see tonight but this is far from over.

Every elite fighter such as Bivol will absolutely flatten Yarde - he needs to take stock and really adjust his career objectives in boxthing.

If he really wants a World Title, he needs to do a Tony Bellew/Ricky Burns by ducking and diving until a soft World Title opportunity appears.

Schooled by an old man, who was a very good World Champion, at the end of his career is the harsh reality of the performance tonight.

We should all give Yarde credit for going to Russia and challenging a very good Champ.

Well done to Frank for sticking this cracking fight on BT Sport.

All the people continuing to argue that Kovalev is shot just because of his age are forgetting what Bernard Hopkins did in the same division against decent fighters more than a decade older than Kovalev. Age is not the necessarily indicative of deterioration. I've made a post in the predictions thread but can people please point out what exactly it is from Kovalev's performance tonight that indicate that he is "shot". His win over Alvarez was his best performance in the ring since Ward I, yet apparently he is "past it".

Krusher (pre Ward 1 and 2) in his prime was totally dominating and taking opponents out - the 8th round tonight would not have happened as Yarde would have been wiped out much earlier.

Agree Kovalev is past his best but shot he ain't. Still a very good world champion.

In saying that, this body shot vulnerability is odd. Canelo will kill him with body shots if they ever fight.

He was wiping out fighters inferior to Yarde. None of these guys have the heart or durability of Yarde. Listen to Kovalev again when he interrupted Bunce's interview. He specifically refers to Yarde's IQ in the ring as being very impressive.

You can't just say Kovalev is shot because he didn't wipe out Yarde early. Boxing is not that simple and that's a comment I'd expect from a casual with a football stadium background pic on Twitter. You're better than that Jurgs.

Kovalev has a two inch reach advantage and is lethal from range. It's not so simple to think that all Canelo has to do is throw shots to the body. Kovalev is weak there but he's also no Fielding.

Canelo has a great chin as proven against Golovkin but I'm not having anyone tell me that MW Golovkin hits harder than LHW Kovalev. I favour Kovalev against Canelo provided there is no catchweight or rehydration nonsense.

I never said he was shot, just not looking the fighter pre Ward that was absolutely dominant in the ring.

Great Champion and will still take a very good/elite fighter to beat him.

Look at Kovalev vs Cleverly, and then look at him vs Yarde. Different man mate. Definitely on the slide, and Hopkins is the exception, its not the norm. The norm is at 36 you are retired or past your best, and Kovalev is past his best.

I think Canelo would have a field day with that big left hook to Kovalev’s body. He’s absolutely brilliant with them shots. You can see stylistically that Kovalev is set up for Canelo now.
