Yarde took one of the worst beatings I've seen in a long time

If Yarde didn't spar for any other reason that being injured then Tunde needs to be sectioned. Seriously.

What about the other 10 rounds?

Yarde gave a great account of himself in terms of heart and chin. But he had no plan B, no answer to the jab, no jab of his own.

He could have done better if he had been matched and prepared differently.

    What a dumb thread.

Was a competitive fight until Yarde completely gassed. Yarde wasn’t winning but most of the rounds he had some moments, it was only after the 8th it started to become one sided and that was because he was knackered.

If he knew how to defend a jab most of the rounds would’ve been tough to score, the jab was the difference.

Tunde has proved pretty useless though, what was the game plan? Would love to see Yarde with Booth.

If he was fit enough to fight how he was fighting in the 7th and 8th for the whole fight then he’d have won that. Admittedly that’s asking a lot...

People are still putting forward myths about sparring. Yarde does spar, he just doesn’t spar against top fighters. Sure this goes against the norm but the advantages are that nobody has any intel on him and he’s not taking damage outside of fights.

Whether it’s right or wrong it’s not true to say that he doesn’t spar at all.

I rewatched it today and I can't say my opinion has changed. It was a brutal night for Yarde. The Kovalev jab is like a straight-right of most fighters, it was in his face all night.

What's bizarre is a fighter who hasn't been in with someone of domestic level, going in with an A-class Kovalev. I said this all along in the build-up and look what happened. It's clear as day that Yarde COULD HAVE done better had he been brought along in the correct way.

Yarde proved to me he's got substance. I doubted his chin and heart and he showed those in abundance.

What he didn't have was a plan B, a jab, a method of dealing with his opponents jab, a competent corner.

Tunde was silent between rounds, where was his loud mouth then when his fighter needed his advice the most?

The fight went like I thought it would although I did predict it would be inside 6 rounds.

If ever there was a lesson about levels, it was last night.

I hope Yarde is the same fighter and that he ditches his setup. If he goes back to fighting Albanian cab drivers then nothing will have been learnt.

A soft touch then someone like Craig Richards would be great.

Every single observer on here knows that with more experience of fighting better opposition Yarde would have been better prepared. That goes without saying. In the end they did it their way and came within a few punches or about 20 additional seconds from stopping Kovalev.

But again for you to maintain that this was one of the biggest beatings in recent times is absurd. Listen to what Kovalev, who is a borderline psychopath, said after the fight. Does that sound like it was an easy night for Kovalev?

I don't see the benefit in that. Sparring is where you can make mistakes. Sparring against fighters who offer zero coming back achieves nothing.

There is a clear benefit in that Yarde will be taking little to no punishment outside of fights which can be crucial to his health and which will also keep him fresh for his fights.

Perhaps that is more important to Yarde than success in the ring. Maybe he has plans outside of boxing.

Clearly sparring will leave him better prepared for the tough fights but this is how they are approaching their training and it nearly worked last night.

Many fighters deviate from the norm in their training. IIRC Muhammad Ali never used to do any padwork.

If there was only one way of training in preparation for a fight, I.e bagwork, pads, drills, skipping, running, fitness training, it would be sparing. It's the no1 part.

No boxers did padwork when Ali was fighting. They wasn't really seen in the boxing gyms till late 70s

James Toney, no roadwork. Just sparring.

James Toney was naturally gifted and anyway not the best example to cite given he clearly has brain damage now.

Some performance from Yarde to land so many punches in one of the worst beatings we’ve seen.
