A while back i made a thread on Joe Louis's How to Box... Opinions were exchanged, copies were purchased via amazon, etc etc. I figured that it might be a solid idea to start a general thread on boxing manuals, ancient and contemporary. Anyone have any good suggestions? I was thinking of purchasing featherweight great Jim Driscoll's Outfighting: Or Long Range Boxing. Anyone take a look at this particular book? [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Out-Fighting-Long-Range-Boxing-Jim-Driscoll/dp/097376984X/ref=pd_sim_b_2[/ame] I've also had my eye on Jim Corbett's Scientific Boxing: The Deluxe Edition. [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Scientific-Boxing-Deluxe-James-Corbett/dp/0973769890[/ame] Opinions on these titles? Recommendations? I'm also posting a nice PDF of Dempsey's here for the curious: http://zinelibrary.info/files/Championship Fighting by Jack Dempsey (1950).pdf
Here is Patterson's [ame]http://www.amazon.com/International-Boxing-Fames-Basic-Skills/dp/1602390207/ref=pd_sim_b_2[/ame] And Joe Frazier's [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Box-Like-Pros-Joe-Frazier/dp/0060817739/ref=pd_sim_b_5[/ame]
i'd love to get a copy of outfighting. shouldn't it be in public domain by now, though? does anyone know of any good manuals on cuban boxing?
http://www.archive.org/stream/physicalculture00fitzgoog#page/n17/mode/1up This is the Bob Fitzsimmons manual.
There are several but almost impossible to fnd outside Cuba. They're in Spanish too, btw. I bought one when I was there 6 years ago. Maybe I will scan the front page (and a bit more) over the weekend and post it.
oh hey, old thread. The Straight Left and How to cultivate it By Jim Driscoll http://www.lulu.com/product/file-download/the-straight-left-and-how-to-cultivate-it/13220310
That Navy boxing manual from 1943 is very good. I did not expect much when I purchased it. There were a few things I did not agree with but it was by far the best manual I have ever seen. As far as the Cuban stuff I would be cautious because they only deal in the amatuer game.
