It is if there are no outstanding black contenders around.

You could argue that Jem Mace was prety rigourous in fighting the best available challengers, though politics scuppered a couple of key fights.

Sullivan was essentialy meeting the best challengers before he broke his arm.

The champions who took long sabaticals such as Corbett, Fitzsimmons and Willard generaly did fight the #1 man when they finaly fought.

I think that in general terms, the pre Louis era was characterised by higher quality defences less often.

In fairness Fitz only took two years and if you accept Maher as a title fight, he then fought Sharkey and then when Corbett came back he met him, made a little money and then fought Jeff, not really a case of ducking anyone I think. He din't fight many coloured fighters though!

Thinks Hank Griffin is a tad under rated in the 1890's

Hank was a good performer but his best performances now look better with hindsight such as the Jeffries, Monroe, Johnson affairs and he has nothing else on his record that was viewed as exceptional at the time.

Thanks for this Matt, although I dont see what Wells had done to merit a rating in 1911. He was really a novice then , plus he was bombed out by the ordinary Gunner Moir in Jan of that year.

A few points, it's year-end and Wells rescued his year with British and commonwealth titles and a good win over the in-form Porky Flynn, no great shakes, I know but the depth was shallow in the HW pool. Also at the time a lot of people thioght he was the real deal.

Fred Storbeck's record going into the Commonwealth title fight was 1-0-0 The win over Hague was not really a British title fight because Hague had lost twice to Englishmen the previous year, to Nutty Curran, and Jewey Smith, but because the fights did not take place at the NSC they refused to recognize them ,typical autocratic bull**** on their part.

Yeah the NSC really screwed some guys, notably my fellow Irishman Nutty Curran who incidentally must be a contender for the dirtiest fighter ever!
Storbeck was actually just after winning the Empire Amature crown, shades of Rademacher here. I still am happy with Well's rating on the strength of the win over the still rated Porky and his perceived promise at the time though I admit I'd probably swap him with Jim Flynn if I do a revision.
As an aside I judge the depth of a year by the 6-10 rated fighters and 1911 is just about the weakest year of all.
