Yes Or No - Is Salvador Sanchez A Greater Fighter Then Julio Cesar Chavez?

If Gomez were moving up after struggling for a long time to make 122, wouldn’t it stand to reason he was more comfortable & better having moved up?

 

It’s the damage you take in that state that’s the killer. Notice Wilfredo Gomez’s legs in his last few defences at 122lbs they don’t come back.

 

No for me Russell, I rate Salvador but hail to Caesar. As a young man he didn’t make the mistake of confusing his attributes as a right or mistake himself for King Ghidora… yet.. he was a beast of labour and he worked tirelessly for those skills not seen since his retirement.

 

Chavez has the better resume. Personally i like him as more proven in the ring ability wise too. He had a long career and was exposed to a plethora of styles. I would have liked to see Sanchez against a few sleek boxers especially at a higher weight too.

There's a couple less questions of Chavez for me due to longevity and proving himself time and again at higher weights as well.

 

No. Chavez deserves the nod.

 

No. I've mentioned it here before, but Sanchez's style was based on being so finely honed and being on such a razor's edge physically and mentally that I don't think it's realistic to expect anyone to maintain that in the very long term, and it would take a long-term run to eclipse Chavez's work. I think Sanchez gets taken by someone in about two years after the time he died. Plus, we don't know for sure how he'd carry the extra weight he'd undoubtedly gain going forward. Too many question marks.

 

NO. Sanchez did have a pretty full career despite dying at a young age, but Chavez went further and I'd have to rank him first. Sanchez - Arguello would have been interesting, but unfortunately Sanchez' career was cut too short.

 

Sanchez was a great fighter without question but he never , ever fought anyone close to Chavez at 126 to 130 ... the closest was a physically strong , courageous and well conditioned novice Nelson and Azumah gave him a hell of a fight ... It''s one thing to use the brave as hell but highly flawed and outclassed Lopez as target practice or overpower a blown up, under trained Gomez; it's another to take on a prime Chavez with an impregnable chin , who was so much stronger and delivered absurd body punishment and never got tired ... Sanchez was prettier, Chavez was deadlier .... both great top shelf guys but I favor Chavez. I'll repeat, the Chavez till Rosario was an absolute beast ... a highly skilled destroyer.

No. People who die young always get the benefit of the doubt. Was James Dean a great actor? No, he sucked; he was awful. But he died young. Jim Morrison? Terrible poet. Never bathed.

How can we ever know? On paper Chavez achieved more but are we talking about potential? Maybe Sanchez had greater potential.
