I wouldn't say MMA fighters are bums. There are some top class fighters in MMA.

However alot of the fighters don't look to good technique wise and get called bums because they have basic trianing in alot of fighting arts (usually a mix of boxing, thai-boxing and ju-jitsu) but do not excell in any one particular fighting art because they train for all fighting styles so do not have the time to excell and become world class in one particular fighting style. They are essentially a jack of all trades, master of none.

When the UFC started you would get world class kick/thai boxers, karate/takwondo experts and top class submission artists (world champions in ju-jitsu, shoot fighting, judo, etc) fighting. These people would then learn aspects of other fighting arts so that they were world class in their original fighting style but had a basic knowledge of the other arts.

However, nowadays most aspiring MMA fighters do not learn just one disicpline as they know that they will need to be proficient in many different styles to succeed in the MMA world so they never get the chance to excell at one particular style (i.e being great punches, great kickers, great submission experts). Therefore we are left with alot of fighters who like i said earlier are jacks of all trades but unfortunatly masters of none which is why they appear to 'look like bums'.

Forrest wasn't the best in the division. You know what I mean.

Griffin has just defeated the legitimate UFC champion, and he came into power because of a reality TV show.

I didn't see the Jackson-Griffin fight. How did Forest win? Did he dominate and win? Was he getting battered but landed a good shot or got Jackson into a quick submission?

Who is the best light middleweight then?

All of the guys from season 1 ultimate fighter were top prospects. Griffin would have been in the UFC, show or no show. It wasn't like "the contender" where the competitors are mostly greenhorns or retreads. Why talk about what you don't know about?

Anyone who watched Fight Science saw him do it. And Forrest is a very good fighter in his own right, Rampage just understimated him, this was obvious by the way he fought.

Boxing and MMA are very, very different sports. Only a fan of both is really qualified to speak on the comparison between the two. I prefer boxing, but MMA is a great sport in its own right, with the truly elite fighters(Anderson Silva, GSP, BJ Penn, Fedor) being on the level of boxing's best.

MMA lost its essence ... I used to like MMA (UFC) but it has gotten so main stream and commercial its not even as entertaining anymore. They're trying to make rules and have sanctions like boxing - when before it was just a one day tournament w/ no weight classes and each fighter being skilled in one discipline. And the only two rules were no eye gouging and no biting

Now everyone has caught on the jujitsu and its becoming more boring ... guys are coming in too bulked up and that doesn't even look right.

I remember the days when Royce Gracie fought in a tournament and it took 4 fights to win the tournament ... and all the fights were fought in the same day ... there was no weight classes so the 180 gracie often times went up against guys who were alot bigger than him.

There wasn't any MMA gloves or anything like that ... guys came in with the attire that was relative to their discipline - not everyone was wearing shorts and was tattoo'd up.

It was a jujitsu guy against a karate guy ... a wrestler v a kickboxer ... a tae kwan doe guy v a straight up street fighter ... and some boxers low class boxers were included in the mix ...

Now you got a wrestler who has a jujitsu trainer, a boxing trainer, and a ****ing strength trainer ... and there's a strong emphasis on grappling and submissioins or a guy who just stands up and trades with a guy ... there's no skill in that ...

I also think the fact that a guy like Kimbo Slice can come in and become a star after being a straight up street fighter is ridiculous and is killing the sport.

Add to that the other different sanctions they got ... Pride, UFC, WEC ... uh the MMA fight league and other small venues they hold across the world.

    Its pathetic --

I think they broaught in the new rules (gloves, weight divisions, non-tournament format) because it was getting to dangerous.

I loved Gracie but he is the reason the UFC is like it is now. He showed people that grappling and ground work were the way to win fights. If i remember rightly didn't he win UFC 1 and 2 without throwing a single strike? (i know he kept flicking out his left leg but that was more to keep his opponent at bay waiting for the right time for the take down than an actual kick intent on doing damage). Because of this the karate/kick boxing/kung fu/etc fighters started learning Ju-Jitsu and thats why alot more fights end up on the floor now.

There is alot of skill in ground fighting. People who don't understand it say its not skillfull and looks homoerotic but i done Ju-Jitsu myself and there is a hell of alot of skill involved. However as skillfull as it is it can get a bit dull at times so i can understand why people may think it is dull.

Its like golf; highly skillfull but quite boring to watch.

The boxing fight was just like an MMA fight - about 20 punches total, 2 knockdowns and a KO, and it only lasted about a minute.

The only things that were missing were the takedowns.

He also got his ass beat on the way to winning those tournaments ... he did throw strikes ... he had a very awkward guard. But that was his style ... he never tried to stand up and box or throw alot of kicks like some martial arts has in it. He rarley used elbows or anything ...

I don't know if they changed it because it was getting to dangerous ... I don't know exactly why but IMO it has hurt the sport. I don't think anyone has died from it as of yet.

I agree that he's the reason why there's alot of Jujitsu involved but I don't think it should be the base of every guys' fighting style.

I like Jujitsu too ... but coming from a jujitsu guy - the technique doesn't look as fluent when a kickboxer, a boxer, a karate, or a wrester does it.

    Hell naw ...

    no leg kicks
    no bull **** clinches
    no sweeping kicks
    no sloppy striking technique

the punches in the boxing match were clean and accurate ...

That Jackson v Griffin fight was sloppy at times and not that entertaining ... Jackson can't fight on the ground and Griffin couldn't throw strikes standing up. It was kinda shitty ...

In all fairness, it's easy to say MMA sucks when you take a exciting boxing match and compare it with a boring MMA snoozefest. I don't think MMA will ever produce non-stop action fights like Morales-Barerra, but, I have come across some entertaining MMA fights before.

I do know about UFC, I've watched the sport for many years now. I'm well aware how the series works, but just how beatable all the champions are in the sport leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Forrest Griffin should have been run over last night, he was hurt by every single shot that was landed on his chin. Jackson appeared out of character, he spend most of the rounds just trying to avoid Griffin's poor striking technique. If reports were to surface about Jackson having some physical issues going into the bout, I'd be inclined to believe them based on his showing.
