my sister does this yoga thing, and she says it tones the muscles and improves balance. i must say i have always been against new-age chinese garbage with names like 'down dog position' and 'the swan warrior position' but i do have a problem in my boxing with balance and overall body coordination. have any of you done yoga and seen significant improvement in your boxing-related capabilities? cos doing this would be a huge sacrifice for me.

    I do yoga.

First, it aint chinese. Second, it aint new-age.
Its like millenia old and indian.

It helped my injury/muscle recovery, flexibility and breathing more than anything. I haven't had a problem with balance so I couldn't comment there.

That being said, I do Ashtanga yoga.. there are a load of different types that can help you in different ways.

Yeah I do yoga, as onepunch said there is nothing new-age about it. I don't understand why you would be against something just because of the names of some the positions, that sounds ridiculous to me.
It would definitely help with your balance and flexibility, you'll be more aware of your body in different positions, help with your breathing and probably provide some isometric and core strength benefits.
With the issues you have told us about I think you'd be crazy not to do it mate. Why would it be a sacrifice for you?

Yoga is fantastic. Not only does it help with balance and flexibility like the two above posters have mentioned, but it also helps your breathing.

Trust me bud, do it. It also tends to be mostly girls, so the nice asses in yoga pants is bonus.

i did yoga at one time in my life. its a nice change in scenarie from the boxing gym. i just felt a little out of place being the creapy guy staring at the beatiful women doing poses while all sweaty.

  6. Plan to in the future. I have copied a few exercises in floor routines but to be honest, i want to see if what they say about yoga chicks is true.

thanks for the advice guys. yah yoga is kinda new-age cos its only become popular recently. it wud be a sacrifice cos i tend to mock meditation/asian whatever stuff so i would feel a little silly. but i think i will definitely do it, boxing is more important than my ego.

I do some yoga as well, balance and flexibility improved heaps. It gives a lot of feedback, coordination wise, that you can use as well. The muscle toning is a load of crap though, but I found it a welcome addition to my routine.

Some of the names are hokey but instead of judging it by the names of the poses or the cultural history just give it a go and find out if it works for you. I do it and it helps to keep me loose and relaxed. This allows me to punch faster and feel more agile.

i used to do tai chi, that also can look rather silly ect, but it was great for balance and co-ordination, id like to try yoga and pilates. However like most of these things alot of classes are "water downed" versions where the trainer has been on a 2 week course to get a certificate. I know this is very true of tai chi.

But i reckon they'd all be beneficial in some way give it a go. Best thing for all forms of training is to try it and see if it works for you! :D

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Find time to fit it into your routine, mark my words, you won't regret it.
