Yoko Gushiken TKO14 Anicento Vargas

Gushiken aint a patch on calderon

 

Been a while since i watched this fight, but i remember it being really bad until a brutal last few rounds.Gushiken made only a bare minimum of effort to engage and barely got any punches off, and Vargas was fighting mostly to survive.

 

haven't seen this fight but I am wondering what Vargas did to merit a title shot. I remember Charlie Magri beating Vargas quite comfortably when Charlie was really still at the prospect stage of is own career.

 

Absolutely nothing most likely.You are lucky if one in three challengers properly earn a title shot in the junior division sub-bantam era.

Gushikens best wins were actually over established Flyweights who moved down to fight him.he's another one who should have moved up to the nearest original eight weight division to take on the established quality that was there, rather than keep making defence after defence.

 

Thanks for posting this. You know i adore Gushiken purely on a viewing level. Not his most 'exciting' performance per se, he's completely in control though. Fine generalship on display here.

 

And yes, Yoko's moustache swung my vote.

Nah, balanced in both punching, applying pressure and boxing at distance smoothly. If i was a fighter, i don't think i'd have the stones to fight like Duran, so if i had the ability my perfect vision of myself would be to fight like Gushiken, or say Gomez maybe. Moustache and haircuts standing, imagine all the girls you'd get being a world champ and sporting hair like that. Virtual facials all round

 

I think it's great, in the context of his uoltimately not so proven career that is. Performance wise, i really like his jab. In some of his best performances, it was a constant. He would apply pressure via it, get the range and bother his man with it, but with authority. When in mid-ring he'd be hitting you with that jab and then you'd back up it seems, then he didn't need further invitation to tee off upstairs and down, all in the same move.
