You are a boxing promoter, your stable of fighters is as follows (TBR pound for pound top 10): Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny Pacquiao Roman Gonzalez Tim Bradley Wladimir Klitschko Juan Manuel Marquez Carl Froch Guillermo Rigondeaux Juan Francisco Estrada Sergey Kovalev Assume the one's who have fights scheduled win them fights, and assume they do what they are told. What fight do you schedule for them next? Bear in mind you are their promoter so you want to make as much money as you can. Weigh up the risk/reward ratio, and while you may not like, for example, Mayweather and may think it would be funny to feed him to Golovkin, you probably want to keep milking that cash cow and not sending it to the slaughter house.
Roman Gonzalez/Estrada/Tim bradley/Rigo can be traded or dealed off to acquire guys like Gennady/Canelo/Cotto/Andre Ward etc etc The 4 I mentioned are good fighters but they have no fan base. None
For me: Floyd Mayweather: Even though it's about 33 years too late, obviously match him with Manny Pacquiao because it will still do a huge amount of money. Manny Pacquiao: see Floyd Mayweather. Roman Gonzalez: A unification rematch with Juan Francisco Estrada is the biggest flyweight fight in many a year. To give them the exposure they deserve, I'd probably put it on the Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard. Timothy Bradley: A few options, but I think at 147, Danny Garcia is a big fight Timbo should win pretty comfortably. Wladimir Klitschko: After he beat Byrant Jennings, a big fight in Europe with Tyson Fury should be his next port of call. Juan Manuel Marquez: I think JuanMa would have a counter punchers field day with Marcos Maidana, I think it will be an easier than expected fight for Marquez because from the fancy pants outfits Maidana's been wearing he's probably enjoying the money from the Mayweather fights a bit much. Carl Froch: Big Vegas fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Guillermo Rigondeaux: Even though it would likely be rejected, I'd target a fight with Leo Santa Cruz, which should at least buy him some TV time. Juan Francisco Estrada. See Roman Gonzalez Sergey Kovalev: Once he's got by Pascal. Try and take Adonis Stevenson out of hiding.
Gonzalez and Estrada have at least got fanbases in Japan and their own country. But if you had to keep them, and build their profile, what fights would you put them in?
I completely understand that Roman is an extremely talented fighter, one of the best in boxing atm. But let's accept it, guys in the lower weight classes aren't appealing to the public (America/Europe etc). Estrada/Segura I think pulled 10+ million viewers and that's great and all but if they can't appeal to the American/European public, they won't make it big in boxing. That's just how it is. Not being racist, but that's a fact. HBO ignored Roman's request of a million dollar purse and it's sad because he's such a great fighter and all, but that's boxing politics for you. But as for your question An Estrada/Roman rematch would probably do big numbers in their own respective countries. But would it really generate much profits for me as a promoter? Nah. Probably not. Their 1st match wasn't even in Japan. I do not think the Japanese fans would even care for that rematch, a Japanese fighter isn't even part of it. They respect Roman, but are they really big fans of his? No. Much rather try to get a Ward or Gennady or someone. A Ward/Froch rematch would do some good numbers in Britain.
The question not about swapping fighters. Just say any other big name fighter is tied down to an iron clad contract and you are stuck with these guys. Regarding Ward/ Froch- remember for the purposes of this you'd be Froch's promoter and not Ward's- there are several fighters in and around Froch's weight class who would do bigger numbers, are more winnable fights, and more entertaining. Regarding Estrada/ Gonzalez, I don't think it would be a bad idea at all to put it on one of Mayweather's undercards. It would probably get more hardcore fans to buy it than something like Santa Cruz v the bum of the month, be more entertaining than a Vazquez fight and the fighters would command much less money. Plus casuals who shell out 70 dollars and don't know any undercard fighters wouldn't feel as short changed if they had a war on the undercard as than they probably did sleeping through Vazquez/ Bey. Guys like Donaire and Darchinyan have proved they can get decent numbers interested in a little fellow, and could start to develop a bit of a following.
I would find a fighter to match up with Pacquiao that would seem like a challenge but would be an easy dominant KO. Someone green but coming off a decent or big win, but someone Pac would crush. Maybe Chris Algeri. After Pac dominates him, I would set up the Mayweather v. Pacquiao fight because the dominant Pac win would be on the minds of the public rather than the Marquez and Bradley losses. It would be time to cash out. After Pac loses or if I couldn't make the Mayweather fight, I would set up Pacquiao v. Crawford to mark the end of the Mayweather/Pacquiao era and the beginning of the Crawford era. Of course I'd have a judge ready to give Crawford a decision regardless of what happens so he would only need to impress one judge to get the win. Hopefully he would be ready and/or age slows Pac down so Crawford can get a KO. Pac can't fight forever and Crawford is the future. Pac will lose some luster after the Mayweather fight but he will still be a good scalp for Crawford. Bob Arum
Thanks Bob, Can't wait for Al Haymon to chirp in. I reckon he'll say he will match Mayweather with some slow plodder that Devon Alexander has already shut out, like, Jesus Soto Karass, then do it again. 2 victories against Soto Karass will be enough to convince Mayweather's fans he's the best ever. And match Sergey Kovalev in a bout a few pounds above the Light Heavyweight limit against 76th ranked Super Middleweight David Brophy. He will also instruct his fighters to ignore career high paydays, and vacate their titles if someone with a pulse is the mandatory. :good
