You are training a fighter to fight either Klitschko. What would be your gameplan? It seems so far that many trainers have no plan what so ever as to what to do. Don't tell me use movement to get inside the jab and punch to the body because there are no Heavyweights right now that even have that skill set. In other words don't just make up a bunch of crap and say "use head and foot movement like a prime Tyson would" because that type of fighter does not exist today. What would I do? I would tell my fighter to put immediate pressure and go for broke in the first two rounds of the fight. I would advise him to use rough house tactics (elbows, forearms until warned by the referee to stop) to try and discourage them. Now, I realize my fighter could get KTFO cold using this tactic but at least he would have tried unlike Peter, Rahman, Austin, Byrd, Brewster II etc. where they just stood there and took a beating. Thoughts?
It depends on what your fighter has. As far as Wlad goes, he wins fights by controlling pace and range, and he is good at it. You need to negate these advantages by forcing him to fight more quickly than normal whilst finding a way to close and vary the distance.
Might look a bit too simple (and probably is) but i would say: Jump on him! Right from the start. DOn't let him breath one second.
I agree. Especially against Wlad I would want the fight to go at as fast as a tempo as possible. Vitali would be harder to scheme for no doubt.
Ok! So our fighter switch coaches depending who he fights. :good Seriously, what would you suggest to cut Vitali? GO and cut him? Headbutt elbow?
I used to laugh at Lennox's advice to Danny Williams which was "try and cut him to get a stoppage" but that looks as good as any I have seen.
Jump on Wlad, make him uncomfortable. I'd try to make Vitali come forward and move around the ring - he barely took a step in the Peter fight other than back to his corner. Get some doubts in his mind about his knees etc, and take him from his comfort zone.
I see a common theme which I think is good ie: jump on Wlad with pressure and make him uncomfortable. It can work the fighter just has to have the balls to do it and not worry about getting hit back. I also think a lot of the Klitschko's opponents are not prepared mentally for the fight. As soon as they start getting hit they have a look of discouragement on their face. Several have looked like they were already beat during their ring walk.
Basically with Wlad get away with what you can get away with until you get a point deducted. Most opponents are beaten once they get to the arena, I agree. It needs a mentally strong character - Haye might not be everyone's cup of tea either personality wise or as a fighter, but is an arrogant ****er who believes he is the man to dethrone them. The rest, forget it.
Take as many punches as you can while reserving some energy. Then hope he gets tired late in the fight.
Therein lies the problem. If I were a trainer of a reasonbly talented HW, I would have him fight as many other guys as possible, racking up as many wins as possible, all the while have him talking as much **** about the Klitschkos as possible. Thereby increasing the value of my fighter's stock and the demand for a fight against either Klitschko. That way, by the time the fight is made, my fighter will have a significant share of the purse and will be able to retire after the defeat he would surely suffer. :good
