Goody Petronelli, the only trainer Marvelous Marvin Hagler ever knew, always used to say, You cant train a chin. No amount of weight work to strengthen neck muscles, for example, will alter how quick a fighters brain goes blank when hit on the chin. That ability to absorb shock is a gift from a Higher Power not something you can improve, like a jab or a hook. Angelo Dundee, who guided the great Muhammad Ali, sees no great mystery. You can't train a chin, he said, simply.
Keeping your chin down does help minimize the effect of a punch but I don't think you can train a chin. Maybe doing drills like you said to streghten neck muscles may help but I'm not sure.
I think you can train, and improve it's durability slightly...but nothing drastic as going from a chin which Khan possesses, to a Margarito type chin. Strengthening of the legs, neck muscles...and regularly being punched on the chin to deaden the nerves slightly are some of the theories I have heard.
Well if you don't know why I'm using Margarito as an example, I have no idea why you are commenting on this type of thread.
You can't train chins. Being stunned or KD is basically a minor concussion - when your brain slams against your skull. Those with great chins basically have a higher than average liquid barrier between your brain and skull. Thus, allowing them to absorb more force. KO is basically a major concussion. What you can do is to train for proper techniques so your chin does not stick out, movement of body parts (head, legs, etc) to reduce impact and strengthen muscles to counter some of the force of the punch.
Nonsense. Part of any martial artist's training is learning how to physically and mentally absorb a blow properly. Having stronger legs and a tougher core can definitely help you take punishment. Nobody is born a fighter, all of the best train and that's a part of that training. The reception of a blow is something people have varying talent for though, just like anything else in boxing.
Update: AnthonyW and Garrus seem to disagree with those great trainers. Can you enlighten us as to why?
Update: I didn't disagree, I offered my opinion like you asked. I voted yes on the poll because I don't believe it is as simple as, 'You can't train a chin'...nor do I believe that you can train a chin to be the most durable in the world. 'I think you can train, and improve it's durability slightly...' :good
May I ask why you started a thread? Was it your plan to be a **** to everyone who disagreed with the statements you produced? Were is the evidence that you can't improve the durability of a chin...even slightly? I might start a thread quoting some top trainer saying some random stuff...attach a poll to the thread, and be a sarcastic ***** to everyone who disagrees with said trainer. ******.
I started the thread stating what World class boxing trainers have said. But hey if you are a better trainer and know more in Liverpool i want to meet you. You must be the best of all time! Sorry i didn't catch your name?
