That's right! Top Rank played the weight card far too greedy, hoping 144 and 147lbs will finally be high enough for Pac to score a win the sport agrees with, but Marquez turned the obvious disadvantage to a weapon, stopped moving around and boxing for the rounds, he sat down on is punches and pulled a Maravilla. Props to Pac for being a great sport afterwards, but his team demanded the fight to be at welterweight, and it was only fair that Manny was stopped by a welterweight. Marquez was never going to win a decision, so he went for the knockout, and embraced every extra pound on his body. That's how you deal with adversity. :deal

    Completely agree.
And honestly even early on it was evident that JMM was sitting down on his punches way more, when he said he would go for the KO that was not just hot air.
Everything he threw was with bad intentions.
The KO was amazing but that first KD.... i rarely seen JMM put that much weight and torque into a shot, the effect was insane.... he damn well lifted Pac in the air.
Never knew JMM could generate that kind of power if he really wanted too.

Yep, they must have thought JMM would have grown old by now constantly putting on the extra weight

JMM is a mexican legend who in my opinion beat pac 3 out of the 4 times they fought

Don't think the weight made much difference. Marquez always gives Pac a tough fight. The weight could have worked to Pac's advantage if he'd been able to land the big punches but he didn't and Marquez did so skill, intelligence etc made the difference imo.

I didn't really think the weight is an issue anyway. It's not as if Pac was going to be 10 lbs heavier on fight night or anything. On fight night they've always only been 2 or 3 lbs apart in all their fights.

Of all the things to criticize Pac about in their fights, this seems like the least of an issue.

Marquez weighed the same weight he did in the Floyd fight.

He may have had a couple pounds more muscle, couple pounds less fat, but lets chill on the supposed amount of weight he gained!

It made a difference as Marquez embraced the extra weight unlike in the 3rd fight, where he was still looking to outbox Pac to be robbed. Here he cut down his output, and like Martinez set down on is heavier punches, also, a welterweight Pac moving right into the punch helped a great deal. Intelligence was always there, hence the many rounds JMM won before. But this time he went for counter-punching over contra-boxing.

Maybe JMM tactic to sit down on his punches made a difference but I'm still not sure the weight itself made a difference because I don't think being above your natural, ideal weight is an advantage. I would have thought JMM would be able to hit harder in a p4p sense at his natural weight plus he would be hitting a smaller more drained Pac so I think JMM could have done the same thing in their fights at lower weights if he'd chosen to fight in the same way. Fighting at a higher weight means Pacquiao is also bigger and hits harder so Marquez himself is more likely to get KO'd. The more times they fight the more Marquez figures him out and Pacquiao getting older and declining physically takes away his main advantages over Marquez so bottom line I'm still not convinced the weight helped Marquez.

It's moreso the distribution of weight.

He isn't carrying stones and **** to gain muscle, he's doing heavy squats and deads to gain weight in the right place and it paid off.

Agreed that he fought differently, physically, but that's exactly because of the extra weight, JMM understood he's winning no boxing contest, he's gonna have to stop Pac for the win, and used every extra pound to generate power. So it was a combination of changed tactics and weight training as JMM admitted - if they demanded the fight at WW, let's give them punches of a WW, and Marquez threw power right hands and body blows from his feet all night. And upon that tremendous shot, a 151lbs Pac moving into a 148lbs Marquez counter made it so devastating, heavy weights collided.

After reading your post I immediately pictured JMM wearing a crown with Eazy E's Real Mother****ing G's playing in the background.

Not sure myself that the weight had anything to do with it.

Marquez weighed in a whole 1lb more then he did for their first fight.

So unless Marquez had some sort of big in ring weight difference this fight that he didnt have for the 3rd fight, I just dont see the huge role weight played in this fight either way.

    Just imo though.

Anyone care to tell me the difference between the in ring weights of JMM 3rd fight and 4th fight? I havent payed attention to the numbers.

The irony is I believe Manny was 147 in the ring for fight 3, 151 for fight 4. Marquez was 150 in the ring for fight 3, whereas he was 148 for fight 4.
