These days belts are meaningless. I'd rather see him fight Mosely, Margo Clottey, Pac et al rather than Berto and Hlatshwayo.

 

You're preaching to the choir. I've been pointing this out for a while now. Not only has he feasted on vacant straps, but the manner in which he has done so is pretty dubious. Fighting Pinto for a vacant WBO strap was understandable given his lack of experience at the time. However, I don't get why Arum would pay step aside money to have fight for a vacant strap in his first fight at Welterweight. Mayweather was the WBC champ, why not try to get a shot at that title? I also don't get why team Cotto acted like Williams didn't exist, and then immediately fought a second rate, domestic level fighter for his belt immediately after Williams was forced to vacate it.

Quintana, Judah,Mosley,Margarito,Clottey and now Pacquaio - no WW has faced opposition that good.

So while you're right the fact that he hasnt beaten a reigning champ says nothing about his career so far

 

Cotto has fought almost everybody in WW that worth giving a damn. So I say the only guy who has better opposition at that weight is mosley. Cotto should be top 1 or 2 WW right now. Thats really the only thing that should matter.

Mosley was an interim titlist when Cotto beat him.
Clottey was a titlist who got stripped to face Cotto.
Margarito was a titlist who got stripped to face Cotto.
Cotto has beaten 10 former and future titlists.

This is a bull**** argument. Without sanctioning body politics, he would have already fought several current titlists.

 

Who cares about ABC titles? Just look at his resume he doesn't duck anybody.

 

The only nitpick I have here is that Mosley himself has definitely faced opposition that good at WW.

DLH, Forrest x2, Taylor (was quite good at 147, only Shane beat him there), Estrada, Collazo, Cotto, Margarito and soon to be Berto is at least as good if not better than Quintana, Judah, Mosley, Margarito, Clottey, and Pacquiao. :nod

Also, beating an active champion isn't necessarily that much greater an accomplishment than picking up and defending vacant titles. What matters is the quality of opposition. Cotto's has been consistently great since N'Dou, with only the occasional Urkal or Gomez hiccup here and there.

 

This mentality has been bashed numerous times on esb and placed in the "look at me I'm smart and detail oriented" jar for losers. I believe big reg and serveral other simpletons have been regulated there a long time ago son.
