Marciano is terribly overrated. When he retired, many boxing ****yst hardly had him in the top all time HW greats. Nobody would list him along the likes of Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey, Tunney, Louis.

He retired at age 32 when he could have still waited fought new comers like Patterson and Liston. I really believe these 2 guys, especially Liston would have whooped him handily.

When he died in 1969 all sentiments poured in. The immaculate 49-0 record (but highly padded) all of a sudden was exalted to ridiculous levels. Many fighters by the way surpassed this record, Robinson, Chavez, Lopez until they went on kept fighting and eventually lost. Holmes very closely almost did.

Marciano's legacy grew over time, and it is mostly because of people who only read sensationalized books about his life, or only watched his highlight wins clips. After Floyd retires, give it about 15 years, he will definitely be regarded much much higher than how he is today. FACT.

Big punchers who can turn the momentum of the fight around with one shot exist in all divisions. True one-punch KO guys (against world class opposition) are rare, but exist in many divisions.

I don't know about any evidence or studies when it comes to this, but I don't see it being this big rise when it goes to HW. People often say that when it comes to the HWs, how it just takes one punch, but I don't see this big jump in one-punch KO artists when it comes to HWs. I see them all over.

There were two recognized belts, there has been since the 1920s but one fighter usually (not always) had them both until about the 1960s/70s.

Underrated and overrated is so subjective since it depends on whom is doing the rating, but 2 retired HWs in which there seem to be quite a number of extremes when it comes to Tyson and Marciano.

Some overly harsh criticism where it causes them to get underrated. Some over-the-top praise from other people.

The Ring ranking Marciano in the top 15 fighters since 1922....that's really overrating. Him, Dempsey, and Pryor were outrageously overrated on that list

Mayweather has long surpassed Marciano's accomplishments.

Marciano couldn't carry Larry Holmes jockstrap. Marciano was very good, but theres a few heavyweights that could of beaten him and beaten him rather easily.

Floyd technically as a boxer is on a complete different level to Marciano.
