Yes they did. In fact nearly everyone did. Most slaughtered Martinez for "cherry picking" a pay day against an undersized shopworn Cotto, not realising Sergio was effectively disabled.

Cotto doesn't want to be highlight reel KO'd, that's fair enough but in that case get the F out of the division and hightail it back down to 154.

He is not fighting any middleweights as it is now, and even his proposed fight with Canelo was not a genuine middleweight contest as it was going to be at a BS catchweight.

I do not consider him to be a MW champ until he defends against a middleweight at the division weight limit. Nothing anyone can say, no argument they can attempt to make will have any effect on how I feel. And I feel the same about any champion in any division.

A REAL CHAMPION defends his belt against the top contenders. He does not defend his title against lower division fighters who are not champions in their own division. Especially in their FIRST title defense. I am not saying he cannot take a voluntary defense, he has that right, but it should still be against a contender in his current title division. Anything less than that and he is a wuss.

Seeing as there are no really decent fighters available for May or June, other than GGG, seeing as there is no other fighter who would provide as big a payday as fighting GGG, it would make perfect financial sense and boxing sense for Cotto to make his first title defense against the best in the division, Gennady Golovkin.

I would just love to see HBO try to promote a Canelo - Cotto PPV without a major title on the line. Good luck with that.

Im saying this because i have a feeling he would want to fight Canelo before GGG. Lets just say hypthetical..

Cotto drops belt to fight Canelo in Septemeber. GGG becomes full champ then Cotto fights GGG in Decemeber/Januray. it would all work out anyways. This reminds of Bhop not haveing an abc belt but being the champ at 175.

Now most of you guys will say him fighting Canelo is the duck and he'll never fight GGG so he should just be lineal champ. but Cotto-Canelo is the 2nd biggest fight to be made in boxing right now?? would you actually disagree?? I love Cotto-GGG but ITS NOT THE BIGGEST FIGHT TO BE MADE RIGHT NOW!! ppl are gonna say "Buck making excuses for Cotto" im not. im saying if he was to drop the title for the 2nd biggest fight in boxing..then its not a DUCK!! If WBC force Floyd to fight a Mandatory and he dropped the belt to fight pac would you call it a duck??

All in all im just letting ppl know that if he drops the WBC belt he is still the MW champ! but if he was to beat canelo then not fight GGG then I call it a duck and somehow GGG needs to become lineal champ somehow. Who knows. maybe Canelo wins then Canelo-GGG for the MW King would be fine by me, no problems.

You don't get it do you? There is a huge difference between a lower division guy making the first move and challenging someone from a higher division and a LINEAL TITLE HOLDER actively searching for an opponent at lower weight classes instead of in his own. THAT is being a coward.

There is a huge difference in Ward calling out Kovalev for a fight and Ward calling out GGG for a fight. GGG challenging Froch or Chavez or Ward is fine. GGG challenging Lara or Andrade or Mayweather or Pacquaio is not.

Cotto's people are not looking for a worthy opponent for Cotto, they are looking for an easy mark. THAT is cowardly when there is a perfectly suitable opponent, another title holder in the same division, ready, willing and able to fight at a moment's notice.

well we can just disagree because I wouldnt mind GGG fighting Lara, Andrade, mayweather. i wouldnt at all. as long as its not all the time i have no problems. most of the fighters in different weight divisions could be better then whats in your weight division.

Larry Holmes dropped the WBC belt in 1983. Did he cease being the HW Champion? Rid**** Bowe also dropped the WBC belt ~ 1992-3. Did he cease being the HW Champion? LOTS of champs have dropped belts over the years. Your "logic" should qualify you for the Special Olympics...

I tried to tell him...he just dont get it. PPL have dropped belts and most of the time its to make a bigger fight!

If Cotto drops WBC to fight Canelo i have no problem with that because its a bigger fight then fighting GGG. but after that fight he needs to fight GGG, no doubts about it

If you think the Triple Duck wants to fight Cotto because of that WBC trinket then you're seriously DELUSIONAL. Cotto could drop the WBC title tomorrow and the Triple Duck would STILL call him out for a fight..
