Judging by the Dempsey fights, you would have to say hed last at least 10 rounds an the available evidence, wouldnt you?

People do over rate Tunney H2H, usually the Tunney fans.
People also over rate Liston, usually the Liston fans.

Lewis KO 3 both of them.

Yep, I can see Liston by KO, no doubt......but I think it would be like the Machen fight, but Tunney was much better than Machen.....

I agree liston did.. my only point is that Liston is so overrated on this forum in h2h matchups.. you'd think he was unbeatable.. which is so far from the truth it's silly?

I think we can agree that lasting 10 rounds with a washed up Dempsey and doing so vs. a prime killing machine like Sonny Liston are two entirely different things.:smoke

i find it hard to believe he would beat either but give good fights. let's face it suzie, we know you're a louis and liston fan, but to say either of them would simply walk through Tunney, is blasphemy.

So do we agree that after Liston was stopped by Ali, Tunney could last the distance?

Some early Gene Tunney reads wouldnt go astray. There is his win over Roberts which was comprehensive. Note that he is referred to as a heavyweight contender here.

and again, Gene is a heavywight for the late sub soldier McKinley. Presumably Mckinley was also.

This one, which describes Roberts as a heavyweight also describes Tunney as a heavyweight.

And sorry but here is one more, particularly interesting because it seems to be unreported unless i just misssed something. Tunney was a heavyweight his opponent a light heavyweight, apparently.

    http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9804E5DF103EEE3ABC4E51DFB667838A639EDE

This article refers to ole anderson as a heavyweight with a big frame, yet he is listed at 168 by boxrec.

here is the josephs fight where Tunney is described as a light heavy desite boxrec having him over the limit for this fight.
