i'm so sick of hearing about how tyson would be unstoppable with rooney and how he'd never lose and how the whole scheme of things woulda never happened if he kept that drunk in his corner ...

anybody else sick of hearing this song and dance?

Well the truth of the matter is that Rooney was a starch disciplinarian who kept Tyson in real good shape, and made him do the things his later trainers did not. The results were an undefeated undisputed champion.
Just like Lennox Lewis wouldnt have accomplished what he did without Emanuel Steward, I believe Tyson would have accomplished a lot more had he kept Rooney around.

Well, I'm a Tyson fan so it doesn't bother me at all, but I do see where you're coming from in a way.
They did work very well together so in part it is a valid point, but on the other hand there are certain fighters that would beaten him Rooney or no Rooney. (Not many though, imo.)

Personally I think there is truth in the theory but I know it wouldn't have any substance had it been a different fighter.

The truth is Tyson is an incredibly weak character...and once Cus and Rooney were no longer around to protect him, people took advantage of him and this gave rise to the detriment of his boxing.

I agree though that this argument is overused and certainly wouldn't be considered with less high profile boxers.

I don't think that Tyson would be " unstoppable " per say. I do however feel that a fully trained and motivated Tyson with Rooney in his corner, does NOT lose to James Douglas. Now, how long he would have held onto the title is another matter entirely. But, I don't see Douglas being the man to take it from him, if Tyson's team and life were all in order.

I for one, have felt deprived as a boxing fan that this fight never came off in 1990-91. The two men just weren't the same many years later.

Well, nobody is unstoppable, so ultimately no, but Rooney did have a way with Tyson.

Aside from the fitness levels, which were always fantastic, Tyson actually listened to Rooney in between rounds and his adaptations concerning combinations can be heard and then seen. He did not just instil discipline, but acted as a guide.

Had Rooney kept Tyson's head down a little longer then he would have sharpened up against Bruno and potentially beaten Douglas - still a hard fight mind where it's doubtful whether or not Rooney would have noted the real stylistic problems for Tyson to 'iron out', a 'bud-dum-tiss'.

Assuming Douglas is defeated, Holyfield would loom and Tyson's naturally frail emotional position coupled with Holyfield’s own vibrancy may unhinge the unbeaten streak.

So a tidier and slightly more lengthy reign, but at some point the outside world would distract all the while the hunger of the current crop would grow to urge special performances to potentially spell disaster one night.

It is highly doubtful that Tyson would continue to walk over everybody before he was 30, which is a theoretical result of keeping Rooney.
