You know what's the saddest part about Floyd Mayweather's career?

If he had fought guys like Cotto, Margarito, Mosley, and Williams, etc, he would've probably beaten all of them. Heck, had he even lost a couple to those guys, i think boxing fan's respect for him would've been much, much higher. It's just a shame he never challenged himself.

    Thoughts?

I think he never wanted any fame beyond the Corrales and Castillo fights. He knows DLH is washed up. He knew Gatti was an easy pickins and so was Baldomir.

I think his search for fame ended at 135. I think since 135 he's only been looking to make money. So I can't take him serious, as far as legitimacy and resume above 135. Only a novelty.

When it's all said and done Margarito will be remembered for being a better welterweight. That's really all that matters.

Good post , but lets not forget when Floyd was fighting these guys at the lower weights he was pretty much untouchable . Ok he went the money route but it doesn't stop him being the most talented fighter I've ever seen in the flesh.

yep, its pretty much easy to see and imagine that floyd would beat most of the welterweights today but he opted to play it safe..its such a waste of talent imo..

Agreed, and am a PBF fan. The 1 he should defo have fought tho was Tszyu at LWW. He was top 3 p4p but if Hatton beat him PBF woulda wrecked him in a career best. I feel the same about my man Joe Cal as I do about Floyd. The most skilful guys of our time but wont be rated like Whitaker or Leonard or any of them in history coz they never got the fights v the best guys. That's the saddest thing. Hope Joe ****s up Pavlik after he beats old man Hopkins, and PBF comes back and tanks Margarito, and then maybe they'll have proved how great they are.

No one is ever going to say, "Remember that welterweight Antonio Margarito? He sure was better that that welterweight Floyd Mayweather!"

Ever. He may have been at that weight longer and he may go on to achieve more at that weight, but he will never be better.

You know whats sad is how everyone who hated floyd while he was active and wished he would leave the sport, now can't help but bring him up and compare every top contender to him now that he is gone. That is a sign of greatness.

Well when discussing legacies and the much fabled All Time Great status you're right but at the end of the day if I was floyd and the kind of money that was getting offered was offered to me I know what I would do.

I wish he'd fough Kostya though ( though I dont agree that becasue Ricky Hatton beat him that Floyd definetley would ! ) that was the only guy close to his own size that I would say he avoided.

If you put him in with Margo he's a former super feather going in against a guy who comes to the ring at what about 160 ?

I'm no fan of Floyd the man but against guys ( Good guys ! ) his own size he was unbeatable.

I think Floyd will come back and take on the last man standing in the welters. Cotto's out now. Williams, Marg, Clottey & zab are left. Once the dust settles, Floyd fights the champs, wins, and the story continues

Good points, but at the point in his career it didn't make sense financially. He could cash out with those guys and for the exception of Mosley and Williams - Cotto and Margarito are TopRank fighters and Floyd had a bitter dispute with TopRank and actually has a lawsuit against TopRank for back pay on the Gatti and Judah fight(s)

Once you reach a certain level ... you don't want to move behind.

You're making 100k for you salary, why go back to make 30k ... it doesn't make sense.

Mosley ducked Floyd Mayweather 2wice, but now that he's at the tail end of his career, he's looking to cash in with one more big payday.

Williams was the #1 contender for the WBC welterweight championship and he opted out to take on the WBO champion Margarito.

agreed .... it only makes sense financially --

he's killing all those birds with one stone and then taking on the guy who proved himself to be the best and takes him out ... that is when he retires for good.
