What do we have. 1. Wladamir Klitschko Buffalo said really, you have a bonafide ATG at the top, right? BUT this was the year he fought Ibragamov, on "the worst heavyweight title fight ever" and made HBO drop the division for years. Hasim Rahman was a defence this year btw. 2. Vitali Klitschko 10 years ago he hadn't returned yet but he fought Peter a few months from now. I'll put him in here but it's tenuous due to the above. 3. Ruslan Chagaev Was anyone ever a fan of this guy? Just a serviceable fringe level guy no more no less 4. Alexander Povetkin Hadn't done much at this stage, kinda crazy how long he's been around though. Best fight was the UD over eddie chambers. 5. Nikolai Valuev Not gonna say a bad word about the man 6. Sultan Ibragamov Eww 7. Samuel Peter You know what he was, immobile slugger with good power and nothing else 8. Oleg Maskaev I forgot this guy existed tbh 9. Juan Carlos Gomez Decent CW but that's it 10. Alexander Dimitrenko Lol. Just lol. So there you have it. Outside of Wlad (who wasn't well thought of at the time) thats a pretty barren division.
If you're old enough to remember that period they were saying the same thing then. People look back to it as a golden age but it was being roundly slated at the time for the depth and quality of the division.
1. Alexander Povetkin 2. Dillian Whyte 3. Jarrell Miller 4. Tom Schwarz 5. Dominic Breazeale 6. Joseph Parker 7. Kyotaro Fujimoto 8. Bryant Jennings 9. Agit Kabayel 10. Tyrone Spong Hmmmm, WBO's current rating.
The only reason why the HW isn't as a good as the 90's is due to the fact that the top rated heavies of today are reluctant to take risks because in this day and age having the 0 on the record is considered more important than having names on your record.
It sucked 10 years ago too. But it did have both Klitschkos still riding high. Povetkin was the #3-4 HW ten years ago and he still is the #3-4 HW now.
