After the knockdown "you" expected Ward to give up like most Kovalev opponents do when they feel his power. They are use to seeing guys like Jean Pascal fold when in the ring Kovalev. The first two rounds went according to script, Ward looked small, was on the canvass, and seemingly didn't have the chin to endure Kovalev's power. But little by little Ward survived, adapted, and began to process an effective attack. Ward never "ran" he stayed in the pocket, out muscled and hustled Kovalev, at one point I thought he broke Kovalev's nose due to the constant stream of blood. Unlike Kovalev however Ward landed body shots and was more active during clinches. Ward initially was the victim of the power jab but soon began to land his own repeatedly. It was slow and methodical but Ward started putting rounds in the bank. No rounds were dominant but Kovalev's head was the one snapping back. When judges see that they score for the attacker. In the second half of the fight Ward began to make Kovalev miss, he became arm weary, his power faded, his footwork slowed, he began reacting to Ward's movements rather than dictating his own. IMO this was a subtle but impressive comeback for Ward, it did not have the drama of Leonard-Hearns or emotion of Corales-Castillo but it was a return from the brink win for Ward! No it was not a robbery, it was not biased judging, it was actually something quite beautiful... it was boxing!
Ward showed you what true champions are made of. So did Kovalev. Golovkin was sitting on the edge of his seat, ringside thinking; "Man, I wish I could be in big fights like this"! The Light heavyweight division has become one of the top most exciting divisions in boxing. The future looks bright with at least 2-3 upcoming exciting and competitive LHW matches.
I didn't think he will give up, but I sure as hell thought he won't recover physically and eventually get KO'd.
Yep, this is a fight where you have to give trainers a lot of credit, whatever they do in the corner is crucial, fight was thin ice!
After the early knockdown, I sure as hell thought this was going to be a short, easy night for Kovalev. Ward hung in there, fought hard, found a way to get it done and in the words of Teddy Atlas he "acted like a fighter". Wait, did I seriously just quote Teddy Atlas?
Teddy predicted Ward would win. He even said that Kovalev would do well early and maybe even hurt Ward, and in the end Ward would come back and take over in the second half of the fight. Teddy actually got it right this time around!
Yeah to be honest he looked a beaten man in that corner but yeah you're right he never rolled over, rather he rolled up his sleeves and got to work, highly impressive
Looking forward to seeing what both fighters do next, finally something worth talking about in boxing!
Yes absolutely right,I hope there's no funny business with the rematch and that it gets done in March as Kovalev says?
