You want to Know something about Calzaghe....

Well that says more about the division right now than the actual fighters.

 

Lockett wasn't on anybody's radar until well after Calzaghe started repeatedly calling Pavlik out, and then suddenly, an Enzo Calzaghe fighter becomes the mandatory. Coincidence? I think not.

 

Neither do I but it could have worked either way. Warren is a sneaky, sleazy **** that usually knows how to weasel his way to what he wants. It could have been that Joe was bait to get Pavlik/Arum to agree to fight Lockett.

What I really think is that Calzaghe decided Hopkins would be his last tough fight and Jones was just to cash out his career. I don't think it was about avoiding Pavlik in particular it was just about getting older.

I agree in part. I do not think Warren was completely honest with Top Rank and HBO.

On the other hand Joe went on and on; "I want to fight Kelly Pavlik. I want to fight Kelly Pavlik." Ad nauseum.

Pavlik posts a UD win over Taylor, destroys Lockett in 3 rounds, and says, "Let's get it on Joe!"

Joe says, "Never mind."

I honestly think the thing that turned Joe another direction was Pavlik's 2nd win over Taylor. No one predicted a Pavlik UD! Hopkins had two shots at Jermain, and failed twice. Winky failed also. Pavlik succeeded. And then when Joe struggled with BHop, that really got Joe worried. Next up, Pavlik absolutley demolished a fighter Joe knew well. That whole series of events created a situation where Calzaghe was simply never going to fight KP.

 

You can't give Calzaghe any respect for it I agree but I think he would have fought Pavlik if he had been a year or so younger and the point I'm making about Warren is it's hard to second guess all the bluffs and double bluffs that could be going on. I don't think Warren knew Calzaghe was going to ditch him before the Jones fight, maybe Joe and Enzo were playing games with him.

After he fought Jones Larry merchant was going on about Dawson being "mandated" to fight Calzaghe. There would always be someone for him to fight and I just think he effectively retired after Hopkins but his eyes filled with dollar signs when he saw Jones.

 

It's true that joe was in dire need of a charisma bypass. Boring as hell

Er...he clearly wasn't. In fact Jim Gray commented how he had never seen a fighter so calm before a big fight.

I think you will find that Froch bashes Joe ten times more.

Maybe in your Pavlik-tinted world. Calzaghe would box circles around Pavlik for fun.

 

(just a point on the start of this thread and it has nothing to do with the discussion now)

the dancing and cocky combinations/defense in that fight was highly appropriate. It has part to do with confidence in the ring and perfectly mixed in well with the flow a RJJ fight. Calzaghe is a massive fan of RJJ and said many times he's one of his inspirations.

The whole match is filled with highlights. It's liked by many of my friends who arn't even big fight fans but know what to expect when watching RJJ. Some people are just sour because their hero got beat by the welshman.

 

Yeah, because fighters like Muhammed Ali, James Toney, Floyd Mayweather etc. would NEVER taunt an opponent like that.

yeah but uhh, it was never cool when they did it either, especially if it was against defenseless ghosts of former legends. If De La Hoya would have taunted JCC, would it have been cool? it's always unsportsmanlike

 

I liked it when JC did a bum dance behind Hopkins in their fight. Hopkins can win but it isn't pretty.

 

I won't lie, that was funny, albeit...slightly gay, don't you think?
