It's a different style match-up. Diaz is not a wrestler, and would not be able to control Alves the way Story did.

I would pick Alves to ko Diaz.

I forgot about Marquardt moving to 170! Very excited to see what he can do at WW. I've been a fan of him since his Pancrease days, he's a monster! I remember when he went all Street Fighter/ Killer Instinct on Wilson Gouveia with the C-C-C-Combo! Extremely excited any time I see him fight.

That's my thoughts to his very poorly thought out argument/point.

Also the reason why I put Alves for sure in there and Story on the "cusp". Story could easly put Diaz on the ground but I don't know how sophisticated his top BJJ game is, but I'd imagine it's well enough to avoid most of what Nick can throw up and avoid certain bad spots and either stand to reestablish a takedown into a better spot or simply stand cause he wants to.

Ok, no-one, at least not me, is arguing that GSP is not the clear #1 at 170,

But some of the other guys, for example, Diaz beat Daley more convincingly than either Shields or Kos, and at that, fighting with Daley's strengths, can you really say Shields and Kos that they have better skills?

Thiago Alves too has lost 3/4, not really looking good in his last fight,

I know Diaz does not have a resume like GSP, but you forgot some other solid fighters like Zaromskis, Cyborg and Sakurai, while not the greatest fighters, are decent title defenses.

Edit: Oh ****, here comes the wrestling beats all, let's forget about Nick's BJJ tidal wave

Don't see how Diaz is a threat to Alves really, Alves is a better striker and I don't see Diaz being able to take him down.

Koscheck beat Daley far more convincingly than Diaz did. I mean for **** sake, Daley was on a couple occasions one punch away from finishing the fight. Sure Diaz's victory was more impressive and in many ways more impressive but there's no doubt Daley posed him more problems than he did Koscheck.

Alves has indeed lost 3/4 but those losses happen to be against wrestlers. He's not lost to a non-wrestler since 2005.

I would reply in far greater detail but the replies above are sufficient.

Well the first KD was from Diaz clowning, the 2nd is just what happens when you slug with Daley,

I still think GSP will win, make no mistake, but I think Diaz has more tools to give him trouble than the others, and yes he has great striking and a chin to recover when he makes a mistake.

But Beekeeper this is my point about wrestling. Because Diaz's wrestling is so poor he had no choice but to slug with Daley even though those were the tactics most likely to cause him to lose. And again it was a damn close run thing, could easily have gone either way.

Compare to that to Koscheck, by no means a slouch standing either, but because he had the wrestling edge over Daley he was able to ride him for fifteen minutes and never be in a moment of trouble. With Diaz's having better grappling than Koscheck, a Diaz that could wrestle would probably have finished the fight just as quickly as the real one did but without twice risking getting knocked out.

Look at all the talk about GSP vs Diaz, its the same thing. No one is talking about Diaz's tactics because they know he'll play a reactionary role in the fight. Its GSP that will determine where the fight goes - whether he'll take his chances standing with Nick or try his luck on the ground. That is too big advantage to give to a world class fighter.

    1. When Daley took Diaz down, he was within moments scrambling to get it back standing because Diaz was initiating sub attempts. I really think Diaz was standing with Daley just to prove a point about his own standup. I did not say he was the smartest fighter.

    2. Ok, Diaz is a much better and proven striker than Kos. Kos did do a good job of controlling the fight but, Daley did have a couple of moments as I recall and Diaz did much more damage to Daley in 5min than Kos did in 15. And remember this?

    3. This I agree with, if Diaz plays a reactionary roll, and there is a chance he might, then he probably loses easily.

    1. Against both Noons and Daley, Diaz went for takedowns he couldn't get. He solely stands with strikers because he can't (as opposed to won't) take them down. And the point wasn't that Daley could control Diaz from top position (indeed I said he couldn't) but that he could take him down. A wrestler with sound submission defensive would have no problems controlling Diaz.

    2. Koscheck has better knockout power and has done it against a much higher standard of opposition. I don't think either of them are that good to be honest - more entertaining than effective. What they excell is wrestling (Koscheck) and grappling (Diaz). The difference is that Koscheck can against most opponents impose his gameplan on them than Diaz.

And again, in a real fight what Koscheck did would win the fight. You hold a guy down like that (with no forced standups or need to 'work') in real life, you can just wait for the other guy to calm down.

*The gif isn't working. I assume that's of the sucker punch? If so that kinda proves my point. Daley was so frustrated that he couldn't land on Koscheck for the entire fight he resorted to a sucker punch, whereas against Diaz he dropped him twice!

    3. If Diaz can't dictate where the fight takes place then he will play a reactionary role. Simple as.

Diaz is not that good at standup? huh? His performances of late would say otherwise,

We are not really talking about a real fight, but I don't really know how you can compare if we do not really know their nut strike resistance

And the pic was of Kos was for the eyepoke reaction :good

They really don't. Noons is a lightweight and still landed way too often on a Diaz that had both a height and reach advantage. That Diaz went for desperation takedowns tells you how he thought he was doing on the feet.

He was bizarrely failing to check Cyborg's leg kicks, and turning a rountine title defense against an overmatched opponent into something something halfway competitive until Santos idiotically went for a takedown.

The Daley fight was impressive for his ability to recover but he was very close to losing that fight and for somebody whose striking style is based around using the jab, wearing people down with constant action showed a worrying lack of movement and ringmanship. Plus his best striking was up against the cage which he's not going to be able to do against St. Pierre.

Very good point. You should tell Koa that one.

    So a foul?
