"Early yesterday morning Champion Jim Corbett, with his manager Billy Brady, and a small party of friends, was in Foley's restaurant in New York when 'Young Griffo' entered the establishment. The Australian, in his usual evening condition, seeing Corbett, went over to him and asked him to "take something." Corbett abruptly declined and attempted to ignore Griffo's presence by turning his back to him. Griffo would not be ignored, but attracted the champion's notice by saying: "It takes us Australians to do up you chumps. Peter Jackson can do you and I can stand you for four rounds myself." To this Corbett retorted: " Here you little whpper-snapper go about your business if you have any or I'll break you in two." Griffo's response was a blow aimed at Corbett's jaw. Jim stopped it with ease, and with his open hand he slapped "the feather" on the chops so severely that he knocked him on the floor. Corbett was wild with rage, and stooping down, he attempted to pick Griffo up that he might slap him again. As he did so Griffo's right leg shot out suddenly and the heeel of his toe caught Corbett on the point of the jaw and the champion fell. As his body struck the floor his head collided against the rim of the iron cuspidor. Brady and Billy Delaney pciked him up unconscious. There was a slight cut on his head just back of his right ear, which bled freely. Griffo and his boon companions made their escape into their hack and were driven away. 1895-04-02 The Brooklyn Daily Times (page 6) The Corbett-Griffo fracas has proved as it was suspected it would without foundation. The champion, Griffo and even Hughey Behan have denied the whole story.
Syracuse Sunday Herald, Mar 31, 1895 Oswego, March 30.--James J. Corbett, the world's champion pugilist, and the star in Charles E. Vincent's comedy "Gentleman Jack," arrived here this evening with his manager, William A. Brady, who came up from New York to see the play and look after some business matters. The company, consisting of seventeen people, arrived from Geneva at noon... The company will leave the city Sunday evening. Buffalo Courier, April 1, 1895 Champion James J. Corbett and his sparring partner, Steve O'Donnell, yesterday took dinner at the Iroquois Hotel, while the other members of the "Gentleman Jack" company ate elsewhere. Saturday night the company appeared in Oswego, and yesterday morning they left there for Buffalo, coming here by the way of Niagara Falls and stopping over several hours to look at the big cataract. Late in the afternoon the party continued its journey to Pittsburg, where a week's engagement is booked.
