Stribling was a good fighter, not great IMO. He has some good wins but his record was incredibly padded by his dad and walk miller and he was really strategically matched often times (which is understandable given his age at the time). That being said he dominated McTigue in Georgia and was robbed of the decision by McTigues imported ref who travelled to and from the fight with McTigue and even carried McTigues bags (not unlike Monzon's ref for the Moyer fight).

    Klompton,

You're pretty well-read on the era. I'm wondering, what did the press say about his two wins over Loughran ? In the Peter Heller interview, Tommy thought he won, and reckoned the crowd booed the decision in the first fight so long the main event was delayed.
Do contemporary reports or any other accounts corroborate Tommy's version ?

Who's doing the rating? I always thought him to be on precipice of greatness but not quite there. I've seen the Sharkey and Schmeling fights and he took a beating there, but his entire record proves he was extremely good.

Don't really know enough about him and/or the circumstances behind his biggest (on-paper) wins - sure I read in the past in a couple of different articles that his KO record (one of the very best) was viewed as something of a fraud - the articles from what I remember seemed to be suggeting that he took his chaffeur on tour with him and knocked him out in every state/city he fought?? Don't know whether this was complete hogwash or anything - can anyone shed any light on this??

A talented athlete and boxer. His record was most certainly padded, but he proved himself a legitimate contender with several quality wins. He fought mostly as a counter-puncher, drawing opponents in with his low hands and relying on his speed and reflexes to get away with it. He also relied heavily on clinching when things were not going his way, earning him some infamy among fans.

I've read that a bout between Young Stribling and Harry Greb nearly came off, but Stribling pulled out.

His death at only 28 years of age was very tragic.
