I feel like Strib is underrated by fans and boxing historians alike, how does he do against Baer?

I just looked up his record and you're right. Stribling is all but forgotten but fought an average of once every two weeks for 12 years and was stopped only once, by Max Schmeling with seconds left in the 15th round of a heavyweight title fight. Pretty amazing record. Fought almost 300 times, lost only 11. If he hadn't died prematurely in a motorcycle crash, he might have gone on to fight in 400 bouts. He didn't beat many greats -- Paul Berlenbach, Maxie Rosebloom, Tommy Loughran were some -- but his defensive skills were considered first-rate. He fought too many Palookas and tomato cans to be rated as more than very good but I give him a chance against wild-swinging Baer.

Were a lot of his fights not on the level supposedly?

Not very well, Schmeling was too strong and hit too hard for him it would be worse against Baer.

He boxed his chauffer in tank towns, his record is heavily padded ,but he could fight.
