Yes that's true, but Hall had also been stopped by Davidson before. Davidson also beat Marty Marshall and Burt Whitehurst. Marshall beat Liston and Whitehurst easily went the distance twice with a prime Sonny Liston. Moore even when he was completely shot and over 40 managed to stop Whitehurst around the same time. Around 4 years before Moore Stopped Whitehurst easily, but this was before he fought Marciano, who ruined him.

In the second fight with Liston, Whitehurst was knocked clean out of the ring in the last round ,and only saved by the final bell when he was trying to get back in the ring.Marshall beat a green Liston by split decision Liston fought half the fight with a broken jaw.Sonny beat the **** out of him in 2 subsequent fights.

Are you serious? Stribling looks anything but textbook on that bag. Lifts his back foot off the ground several times during that short video while throwing right hands, hits the back from too close range not extending his arm to get proper power in them.

Please look at Scott on the heavybag. To look any worse he would have to cut off an arm.

You should see some of the newspaper writeups of Scott's 1st round ko loss to Knute Hansen. Scott apparently looked completely inept as he went down 6 or 7 times before the ref had to drag his unconscious body to his corner.

Liston knocked Whitehurst clean out of the ring in their second fight,he was in the process of tying to get back in when the final bell rang, rescuing him from a ko.In their first fight Liston was having his 3rd fight in 2 years ,having come out of jail. Citing comparable results leads to very dodgy conclusions.
eg Moore was stopped by Jimmy Bivins in his 89th fight, and stopped by Ezzard Charles in his 91st.Do either stop Liston , or even dent Sonny's chin?

    I love old fighters.
    But that's just bad.

And what and oddly small bag!

It's just so bizarre. If I ever saw someone throwing punches like that in a boxing gym, I'd assume right away that he was some guy who'd probably wasted a lot of time trying to teach himself how to box without any actual training. He doesn't look like he knows the basics of how to punch or move his feet well. Yet this guy was a peripheral contender for the heavyweight championship of the world at one point. Strange.

One wonders what was the context... If you watch his fight versus Sharkey, you see competent footwork, at times a quick, pecking jab looking to set up a long right. He hangs his chin out like a flag and doesn't have a clue how to protect himself when he misses with the right and is quickly loathe to lead once he's been tagged BUT... it's nothing like that "heavy"bag footage (which is not saying too much). He reminds me of... a slightly smaller David Price.

Considering the results when either fought a decent contender, I think that makes a lot of sense.

Good point. Makes you wonder whether his trainer just saw the heavybag as something you hit for cardio and conditioning or something. Don't understand why anyone would want their fighter to throw punches like that though, since throwing punches the right way is just as good of a workout. And I don't understand the (lack of) footwork either.

Definitely throws better looking punches in the fight clip. Astonishingly inept at protecting his face from punches though.

The film was made to publicize a fight. So he ran down the road past a cheering crowd and he sparred on the sidewalk instead of in a ring. Somebody probably tossed him a pair of those old bag gloves and said something like "hit the bag champ, show em how hard you're working."

And, since his hands weren't wrapped and since he was a pugilist and not a thespian, that was the best he could improvise. It had, I reckon, nothing to do with anything other than it being a publicity show.
