Does anyone know much about him? I recently watched his losing effort to Jack Sharkey which wasn't a bad fight. He seems to have a great record but as I looked more closely it seemed to lack any real depth. What's the deal with him? Also, what happened in his 2 fights with Carnera? I read they both ended in DQ's.
Use. Search. Function. There was a nearly identical thread on him only 2-3 month ago. Regarding the Carnera fights. Both were possibly fixed since both were known to have participated in fixed fights - also it´s exagerated most of the time. Have no prove for this other the way the fights played out and their history in fixed fights. Stribling had an interesting live. Sad he died that young.
Right click on Search and open in new window, old search page is displayed, hurrah I recommend 'King of the Canebrakes' good read if you're interested in 'W.L.' and can track it down
It is, cost me a pretty packet, Ebay is a good bet or Alibris is a very good site for rare out of print books. Some of these old biographies/autobiographies are much better than some of what is turned out these days, Barney Ross's (his own, not the recent one) and Mickey Walkers are the 2 best in my opinion
I had a quick look for the book and it seems a tricky one to find. He seems like a interesting character indeed
Walker captured, romanticized and epitomized the jaunty popular image of the Roaring 20s in a colorful way that few who lived those times have written about. His story would have made for a nice profitable good movie while many who lived then were still alive. (When "The Sting" was released might have been an appropriate time to produce it. After the early and mid 1970s though, that window of opportunity had likely closed.) When I read Walker's book, I could hear the music.
i read a few years ago that a lot of his victories were against his fathers workers, they, the striblings were quite weathy. max schmeling was supposed to have beaten him handily too.
That's the one. Why it wasn't made into a movie shortly after publication is baffling. There's some baloney in it (particularly about the alleged Greb-Walker street fight), but never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
Schmeling seemed to really take apart smaller fighters, ATG's or not. He did a job on Walker as well, keep that in mind.
