Why don't you guys talk about him or hold him to high regard? I don't know much about the man or his opponents but 256-16 is a very impressive record and I believe he deserves mentions here and there. The man fought 55 times in one year. Goddamn. Discuss.
Stribling ,"The King Of The Cane Brakes," a very good fighter but many of his ko's were scored in tank towns over his chauffeur called Joe Blow ,Joe Whomever . Focusing on his power first,he scored 12 ko's over debutees,10 over guys without a single win,and 16 over men with losing records. That's 38 ko's that are less than stellar. Now looking at his dec wins we see that he has 4 over debutees and 14 over those with losing records. Several of these "debutees" have no further record, and are likely to have been his driver. Stribling was also involved in a few barney's with the likes of Carnera and a couple of others. His record is actually 253 fights 224 wins 13 draws ,14 losses. Still a fine fighter but a very hard one to accurately assess, imo
Durable but with a very padded record. Good fighter that gets overrated by just looking at his stats. A closer inspection reveals a good fighter that was not elite and would lose when he stepped up in competition. Has a few decent scalps. A decent contender for the era
Well that's nonsense. Yes he fought alot of tomato cans but "not elite", a few decent scalps, lost when he stepped up? He lost in the final minute of the 15th round to a prime Schmeling in a FOTY which is more than Joe Louis could say when facing a past prime version. Wins over Loughren 2x Rosenbloom 2x Slattery - Coming off of two wins over Rosenbloom Risko 2x - Coming off a win over Berlenbach Delaney x2 McTigue Old versions of Renault Levinsky Losing to Schmeling & Sharkey at HW, Berlenbach who he also drew against, Loughren and Delaney who he won the series against and Slattery which they split can hardly be considered losing whenever he stepped up. Pretty stellar list of scalps in one of the top 3 LHW eras in history. All of this before his premature death at age 28. FYI Gene Tunney was supposed to fight Stribling they built an arena for it in Miami and everything then Tunney secretly attended Stribling's public workout and cancelled the fight afterwards. Choosing to move up to HW and face Dempsey rather than risk facing Stribling and blowing his chance at more money and fame in the glamour division. He also lost to Loughran when both were at lhvy.Lost to Slattery and split fights with Jimmy Delaney he never fought Jack .His wins over Risko were when Risko was pre prime but still decent victories.
Fair point on my quote he lost "whenever" he stepped up is overly harsh. He was a good light heavy and he is in the HOF. He failed at heavy against Schaaf, Schmeling, Sharkey and the Carnera fights were likely fixes. So he was unable to translate in the HW division to elite status. A very good fighter with a lot of padding, I personally don't believe he is hall of fame material but that's just my opinion.
I'm loathe to use the word great , but for me he was very good. I'm perhaps too sparing with the word.
