Young was so dejected by this loss. After this fight is when he started the drug use. His last great performance.
I recall a interview with young about twenty years, in which he basically said the same as you. That the Norton loss had crushed him, that his life went down hill afterwards. Off course after that came losses to cooney, tucker etc. So if he'd have beaten Norton he'd have held the wbc title eventually and perhaps signed to meet the young holmes?
Yea one of my best friends whos about 6 yrs older than me was a sparring partner of Jimmys thats what he told me. He also said Jimmy reguarly smoked Kool's and they would for beers ( millers ) after there workouts lol. This was befor the Norton fight. 15 rounds smokin Kools while in camp!!
I don't think they would ever have faced each other Fergy. I remember reading an article about Holmes, and he said something like "Jimmy Young, me and him are real tight, I lent him a shoelace after he broke one on the night he beat George, we could never face each other in the ring" That's nearly word for word, but I am going back, to around a 1980 Ring magazine.
I had Young winning in the 9-6 range IIRC. Several close rounds could swing either way, depends on what you like. Love watching Young. So much skill, so subtle.
Had Norton winning it in the last round, but it was real close, probably more like a draw.Norton was doing some things with that body work.
Raga, u have a good memory my man. But it's funny, cos I can recall certain interviews and quotes from years ago my self. I remember Michael nunn talking about barkley, almost taking off ali, calling barkley to ugly to be champ. Lol. And that was about 89.
Yep, I remember Ali giving Frazier grief at a press conference before their last fight, "The man's too short, the man's too old, the man's too ugly" as he held a toy gorilla in one hand and punched it with the other. People were laughing at the time, but I often wonder, even these days, if Joe was hurting deep down inside listening to all that.
Add the verbiage to your Ali quote above ^: "When I get the Go-rilla in Manilla" "Here Go-rilla"....and Ali started hitting the toy. Legal Eagle Howard Cosell may have been conducting the interview. Sad situation.
The Young Norton go was so close, I had Jimmy up by a round and it was the sharpest punching I ever saw from him. He was never a puncher but in this bout his right hand was stiff and cracked home many times. Kenny was right there the whole way and the winner could have been either one.
I think the fight could be scored eiter way. 8-7 Norton or 8-7 Young or 7-7-1. It was that close. I couldn't definitely pick the winner after watching it.
st pat, thats it! sp subtle! That's Jimmy Young, the little things he did, so subtle. I love boxing, love a lot of boxers, mostly the defensive masters, but Jimmy Young, he's the man, and for all his great skills, its those little things he did that makes you say, Oh!
