McVea over Jeannette. I'm not saying you're wrong (Jack Johnson agreed with you), but I'm curious why, since it seems the less popular opinion.
I left Greb out because he held a title,of course that's no reason for anyone else to.Greb v either Fulton,Godfrey,Firpo,Wills might have been instructive.
I felt Norton had a stronger claim as a champion but he probably didn't,so I possibly shouldn't have included Tucker.
Brion was only a fair fighter.Layne had been ruined by Marciano,Bucceroni was really a light heavy.Lastarza was a protected fighter who was very well managed.
Dunno, I was just always more impressed by McVea's record and write-ups Now that I think about it Jeannette should've been on the list too. (That being said I still rate McVea higher, barely)
Fun topic and good list. I can't think of any big omissions. Buddy Baer seems the weakest. I would go with Johnny Risko or Paulino Uzcudun instead. Other than that, a fine list for me. I originally questioned Conn and Moore not being on the list, but I see in a later post that you weren't doing champions so they are explained.
Why do you rate Philosophie Jack O'Brien over guys like Samuel Langford, Ike Ibeabuchi and Jerry Quarry?
1 - Harry Wills 2 - Sam Langford 3 - Peter Jackson 4 - Joe Jeannette 5 - Sam McVey 6 - Elmer Ray 7 - Jimmy Young 8 - Archie Moore 9 - Tom Sharkey 10 - Jimmy Bivins (if you count him) 11 - Harold Johnson 12 - Zora Folley 13 - Jerry Quarry 14 - Eddie Machen 15 - Ron Lyle 16 - Harry Greb 17 - Bob Pastor 18 - Tommy Loughran 19 - Ernie Schaff 20 - Earnie Shavers 21 - Kid Norfolk 22 - Billy Miske 23 - Fred Fulton 24 - Joe Choynski 25 - Billy Conn 26 - Joe Maxim 27 - Larry Gains 28 - Ray Mercer 29 - Tommy Gibbons 30 - Oscar Bonavena If you don't allow Bivins, Steve Hamas creeps in.
