Get him 20 or so amateur fights. If he makes good progress and can knock guys out **** the olympics its not exactly doing wonders for whatever his name is who competed for the US and won a bronze in China. As far as when he'd be ready for a title shot...you'd want to get him a lot of bum fights to start of his career so I'd say after around 30 fights or so he should be ready for big names.

I'd inform him that I charge weekly and that I don't accept checks.

1000 to 1 is pretty good odds if you got the balls to go after something. Every division has some guy at or near the top who picked the sport up late and is just a natural fighter. If this kid wants it bad enough he can make 1000 other losers his bitches on his way to the top.

    That's what I was thinking...

He's a good kid, too. I'm not a trainer, but I was thinking about enrolling him in a gym and at least let him see if he really wants it. The more I think about it, the more I wish I had taken him early in the summer. :think

Stupid post ever ! What made you think that all 6'4 225 will be able to become boxers?
Boxers are breed from a young age, the only ones who would fight profesionally are the strongest of all, the ones who can take a punch to the head and body. Boxers are a special breed of men not everybody is born for figthing like them. Sometimes people from this forum said ohhh NBA players ohh SHAq! well they didn't born to be fighters for that reason they practice other sports and not boxing.

I'd tell him to teach YOU how to spell...damn, bro...

...anyway, the fact that he is 6'4, 215 and in great shape means absolutely NOTHING...neither does the fact that he has marital arts experience. What I would do is find out how much he knows about boxing. Having someone who knows the boxing basics simply from watching boxing is a good start somewhat...somewhat. If he doesn't know the first thing about boxing, then I'd start hm from scratch, and go from there. I wouldn't rush him...

...actually, going off your line of questioning, I'm sorry but it doesn't seem like YOU know a lot about boxing, because some of those answers are obvious.

You have valid points, but you overstate them to an extent.

I think had a lot of these physically and genetically gifted guys really become interested in boxing, they could have been molded into really good fighters.

If you're a trainer and a dude just walks into your gym and based on looks alone you start immediately thinking 'Olympics in 2 years' then you are definitely in the wrong line of work.

How about maybe...teaching him to jab? Or something.

    Jesus.

Well, the only question is how he will react once he gets in the ring and starts getting beat up. Will he like it? Hate it? If the talent is there, it's time to test the chin and heart.

people here dont know how much progress a person can make in just one year.. and in the heavys a little progress goes a long way.. when i started boxing it took me a month to start sparring and by two months i had my first amateur fight and in a year i already had 15 fights and fighting in the open class.. and that was fighting at 119 where everybody is quick and knows how to box.. imagine at heavy where guys are slow and have poor technique.. what im saying it all depends on the guy and how quick he can learn and how dedicated he is..
